So, i am signed up for the math 2 and physics subject tests because I am planning on majoring in engineering and it is "RECOMMENDED" i take 1 math subject test and 1 science subject test. I am signed up for the December 7th test. The UC App deadline is November 30. Here is my situation: When you take a test later than the app deadline you have to notify UC that you are taking that test and they can expect scores to come in after the deadline has passed. Although, what if i dont like these scores?.. idk.. what im trying to ask is if having really low scores (lets say Math 2 -680 and physics - 600) will hurt my chances of getting into a school UCB or UCLA versus having no subject tests? And if it bad if they are low, is there any way i can tell the app that i am taking the test and then just not send them? Or will they be asking for them later? I am currently self studying physics, so that is the reason why im so paranoid about getting a really low score. Thanks for reading! Responses are also appreciated!

Bump!! I know this is a tough question =/

This is one of those questions with no answer. Not having the recommended tests is not going to help your application. Neither does getting low scores.

Why physics? Have you tried the practice tests. You might do better with bio or chem if you’ve actually taken those classes.

Pick two tests you can do well on. Then make sure you also apply to some UCs that are easier to get into.

Okay, regarding the definition of “recommended" in college admissions parlance:

Maybe if you’re applying to the College of “Nobody-Ever-Heard-of-It” (which has a 98% acceptance rate), “recommended” actually means recommended. But otherwise . . .

“Recommended” = “required”

So, it doesn’t matter what your scores are. You won’t have much chance of getting in if you don’t submit them, so you might as well commit to submitting them . . . and do the best you can to prep for the tests!

And I agree with the above advice to not limit yourself to the two most competitive UC’s!

By the way, yes! I am applying to other UCs… these are the only ones i am really worried about regarding this situation
