UC Application Questions Thread

Well now that website is working again, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread like this.

Post questions and answers that you might have regarding the application.

Whelp.
Guess I’ll start.

On the personal info regarding your finances.
Where it says household income, do you have put down younger siblings income too or no?
Or just you and your parents?
Do you put them down in the total of your household or no?

They are 20 and earn a substantial more than my mother, so that’s why I’m curious.

"Prior to transfer, you need to complete two transferable college courses in English composition (not including English as a second language courses). You reported just the one course listed below.

ENGL 5 - Critical Thinking

What is the status of the second course?"

??? I’m using AP credit to fulfill the requirement for ENGL 1A, and I’m clueless as to how I’ll be able to bypass this. Do I actually have to take English 1A? I’ve already taken a higher level English course and I received an A in it.

@goldencub, Just note the AP course in the additional comments as fulfilling first part. The app doesn’t juggle the AP part too seamlessly.

@lindyk8 ah, that’s a relief.

I’m going to end up calling the help line for this on Monday but I’ll try here too:

I imported my TAP info into my application, but some of the campuses I went to was imported incorrectly to myuc, but correct on the TAP website. It won’t let me fix it on my application and I don’t want to report incorrect information, even if it’s just something like listing the wrong campus attended during the summer session. Is there a way to delete the information that was imported from my TAP so I can enter in all my academic information manually? I don’t see anything, but figured it was worth a try to ask.

Never mind, I figured it out. You really have to be careful of all the dates you put on your application.

Nobody knows?
Guess I’ll just call on Monday the help number.

@goldencub what did you get on your AP test? I got a 3 on mine, and Berkeley doesn’t accept anything lower than a 4 for that requirement, so I had to take English 101 (equivalent to 1A at our school) this past winter, even though I already was cleared at my CC to take the higher level English class, and actually had already taken the higher level class. If you got a 4 or 5 you’re good, but if not, you need to take that lower class even if you’ve already taken the second requirement.

@Nediac Seriously? I did get a 3 - but on the UC TAP for TAG, I put my AP test score, and it said that it grants me 5.33 units? So that guarantees me units at least. I’m following IGETC as well, and a 3 will satisfy IGETC - so isn’t that all that matters?

“Note: IGETC certification from a California community college or a letter of reciprocity from a UC campus satisfies the Reading & Composition requirement (and all other L&S breadth requirements).”

http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/rc.html

I’ve taken not only the second English class required for IGETC (critical thinking I believe), but I’ve also taken a higher level course - the equivalent of Berkeley’s ENG 45B - and earned an A in that. It seems ridiculous to have to go back to complete 1A (if I need to, then of course I will, but I would REALLY like to avoid that).

(I posted this in the wrong post)
In the TAP, for entering which high school you went to and graduated from, do you have to list every high school you went to? High school was about 13 years ago for me, and I went to 3 different schools before graduating so the exact dates of when I went to each high school is kind of fuzzy for me. Do I have to list every high school I ever attended or just the one that I graduated from? If so, how accurate do I need to be about the dates (I only have ballpark estimates of the months and years I went to each one)?

@boxandwhiskers I was told you have to. Not sure about the dates. I don’t think you would get penalized if the dates aren’t that accurate.

@selimpride Thanks

@Nediac http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/ap-satisfy-admission-and-igetc-req.pdf it seems that a 3 will satisfy the requirement for IGETC - I’m pretty sure that’s all that matters, as IGETC certification will satisfy all general ed requirements. I would only have to take Eng1A if I were following breadth, I think???

Not so much a question, but a heads up:

make sure you read all the TAG agreements available for your chosen school. You don’t want to waste a TAG if you’ll be ineligible bc you didn’t take math by a certain time, or have 2 english classes done.

TAG Matrix: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf

UCD: http://tag.ucdavis.edu/
UCI: http://www.admissions.uci.edu/applicants/tag.html
UCM: http://admissions.ucmerced.edu/tag
UCR: http://admissions.ucr.edu/WhyUCR/ourGuarantee#transferStudents
UCSB: http://admissions.sa.ucsb.edu/applying/transfer/tag
UCSC: http://admissions.ucsc.edu/apply/transfer-students/tag.html

Dang. For UC Davis TAG it says " Full-time enrollment at a CCC from spring
term 2015 through spring term 2016 is expected; part-time enrollment is
permissible for good cause. Students should provide a briefexplanation regarding part-time
attendance on the UC TAG Application."

What about the years prior to 2015-2016? From Fall of 2013 to Fall 2014 I was only taking 9 units at a time because I was working. Once Fall hit I quit and began taking more than 9 units.

@boxandwhiskers says nothing about previous years. I would say not to worry about it.

@boxandwhiskers I think you’re fine. Working is definitely something they would consider a good cause, thus making it permissible. I may be wrong, but it seems that the only actual requirement regarding full-time attendance is during the 2015-16 year, so prior terms should be irrelevant in this regard.

The 2 above are correct

@goldencub I went off of this: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/exam-credit/ap-credits/berkeley/index.html

I was in the same spot as you. I assumed my 3 would cover it, but found out right around application times that it wouldn’t. It clears the lower English requirement for almost every other UC, but Berkeley is special, haha. I had 2 of my counselors confirm this (they almost messed me up a few other times, though, so that might not mean much), so if I were you, I’d either get in touch with Cal about it, or talk to your counselors! Basically I was told that although it does clear the IGETC lower division requirement, certain UC’s won’t accept that as a “passing” score unless it’s a 4 or above.
