UC Application Questions

I wanted to know if one needs to have all the prerequisites and IGETC done by the time applications are sent out in the fall? The reason I ask is because I will have only 2/3 of my prerequisites done by the current spring 2013 semester. Also, when I apply this upcoming fall my last statistics and anthropology class will be in progress. I will have 39 UC transferrable units at the end of the current semester and plan to have finished everything by the end of spring 2014. Does applying without completing IGETC and only 2/3 of the prerequisites I’ve done have a negative impact on the possibilities of being admitted? Is it possible to apply with only 39 transferrable units? I am a CC student and the first to go to college in my family. I really have no one to ask for help, so if anyone could shed some light I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.......... :]

Depends on your major and which campus we’re talking about. If it’s UCLA and Berkeley, then I HIGHLY recommend you complete ALL your prereqs (and GEs to a lesser extent). Trust me, there’s tons of applicants who’ll apply with your same GPA but they’ll have all their prereqs done and that’ll put you at a disadvantage.

What major are you applying as?

You should have a LOT of the IGETC done (or at least planned to get it done by the end of the Spring semester.) I applied to schools, and I still have 1/2 classes required to finish the IGETC (which im working on this semester). Ive seen schools accept without a 100% completion of IGETC, but their chances get lower with every requirement not fulfilled.

I’m applying as a philosophy major and want to attend either Berkeley or UCLA. My GPA will be at 3.84 for when I apply. I see what your saying cinnabon, since some individuals will probably have everything completed that will place me a few steps down the stairs. It’s a bit stressful thinking about being at my college until 2015…

TransferDK, do you mean by this spring semester going on right now?

Thanks for replying by the way. This is my first time on here and it’s great to have this type of support.

You say that you’ll only have 2/3 of the prereqs completed. How many do you completed as of right now? You still have this Spring (2013), Fall (2013), Winter (2014) and Spring (2014), so even if you haven’t taken any prereqs so far, you can take one prereq each quarter next year and complete all of them in time. Remember, the UCs only require you to complete your prereqs by Spring, and NOT by the time you apply.

Also, finishing IGETC is highly recommended, but not required. It may however be a big deal for UCB and UCLA since they’re very competitive. With those two UCs, I’d just go ahead and plan stuff out with the assumption that every major there is impacted. It’s always safe to close every single hole your application before applying. Is there no way that you can finish your IGETC by Spring 2014 (next year)?

In my opinion, you should try as hard as possible to finish both your prereqs and IGETC by Spring 2014 (give your prereqs more priority, since they’re more important though) and apply this Fall. If you get in to UCB or UCLA, then great! If not, you’re still guaranteed to get into all of the other UCs (they’re not as strict with prereqs and IGETC as Cal or LA). At that point, you have the chance of attending another UC or waiting it out and reapplying to UCLA and UCB for the next application cycle with all your requirements completed.

When this semester is over, I will have 2/3 of the prerequisites completed and only two classes remaining to finish IGETC which will be done in fall 2013.So, pretty much I will be done with everything by the end of fall 2013 semester. However, since the applications go out prior to the end of the fall 2013 semester, the classes that I need to complete will not be part of my transcripts. I will definitely be done with everything by spring 2014 no doubt about it. I taught everything needed to be done for when you actually apply.

^Oh what? In that case, scratch everything I said so far.

Finish your prereq and IGETC next semester, apply for the UCs this fall, get accepted to UCB and UCLA, and have a blast there next year. Seriously haha, why are you even worrying? The UCs ask for your Fall grades in January so every class that you take will be on the application they review next year. You’re golden, don’t even sweat it. Good luck with the application!

Great! I whole-heartedly want to thank you for the information. You took time out of your day that you will never get back to help me. Thanks, seriously you kicked alot of stress out my life…
