University of California officials have extended the admissions application period for panicked students who could not file their online applications in time for Monday night’s deadline because of a computer slowdown. The new deadline is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 2).

By this evening, about 129,000 UC applications for freshman and transfer students had been received, compared with about 126,700 by last year’s deadline, Wilbur said. About 2,600 were submitted between 6 a.m. and about 5 p.m. today.

When is there NOT a computer glitch on the final day of the UC app fliling period?!! That’s why our school tells the kids to file at least a couple of days earlier.

I believe I read somewhere else that 2/3 of the applications UC receives come in during the last week before the deadline. Some portion of those are in various stages of completion, so it isn’t like the applicants are just reviewing it one final time. Some applicants, judging from some of the posts on CC, have barely started filling it in before the deadline. I guess it’s like the adult version of waiting until the last minute to fill out the tax forms, LOL.

Amazing that the number of applications to the UC System has gone UP, considering the recent news about tuition hikes and cutbacks.

Maybe it’s all the students who normally would have gone to private schools but now won’t due to a change in parents’ abilities to pay… Or OOS students hoping their hefty tuition will give them an “in”… sad, tough times for the old UC system.

UCs are still an outstanding educational opportunity. And compared to private college tuition, still in the almost affordable range (especially for the commuters).

Tuition is waived for students from families earning $70K or less – see:
[UC regents approve 32 percent student fee increase - 11/19/09 - San Francisco News - abc7news.com](http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/education&id=7128122)

so those tuition hikes are hitting students whose families are at the upper end of the economic spectrum, and unlikely to qualify for a lot of need-based aid for private colleges.

Even with the tuition hikes, UC is less expensive than U/Michigan or U/Mass, to take two. In other words, it’s still a good value.
