I recently looked at my transcript and for the first time found out that there are things called UC approved classes…So does this mean that when colleges look at your grades, they calculate only the UC approved class grades and view the rest as credit/no credit? If they do, that would be a lifesaver, but if they don’t, I don’t want to not know that and apply to somewhere too high…because if that is so, my GPA jumps to about 4.7 or 8 and without it, it drops to about 4.4.

For UC schools (University of California), to determine eligibility for admission, they are using your grades starting from the summer after 9th grade to the summer after 11th grade. They are using the grades in only UC approved courses and allow up to 8 extra grade points for AP courses. Of course, you still need to pass all subject requirements and you are taking some of those in 9th grade. Other colleges may include freshman grades.

thanks a lot toby. do you happen to know if this applies to privates, though i doubt it, and if privates look at your freshman year grades?
