UC Art Requirement

So I’m a high school junior considering application to several UCs, and I was reading through there admissions requirements when I saw a surprise – this full-year of art/music thing. Summer 2013 I took simultaneous art and music courses to fulfill my school’s own graduation requirement. Most students at my school do that. Also, in eighth grade, the year before I entered high school, I had a year-long art course.

Would either of these make me eligible, or am I screwed? This seems like a really stupid thing to get snagged on.

Well - you aren’t screwed because you can take the class next year. If you are a CA resident, go here:
<a href=“A-G Policy Resource Guide”>A-G Policy Resource Guide;
and look up your high school, it will tell you which courses count for each requirement. Your summer class might count - it might not. Also note - the CSUs have the same requirement so, find out for sure if you want to go to a CA public college.

^Go to the doorways website linked above and look up the nearest community college. You only have to take a one-semester, 3 unit CC class to fulfill the requirement. My son took an online course through our local one.

I don’t think online classes will count in “F” visual & performing arts classes.

From the A-G site http://www.ucop.edu/agguide/online-learning/online-courses/index.html</a></p>

That being said, you should be able to take PART 2 (one semester) of either that ART or MUSIC class you took Summer 2013. It just needs to be consecutive or just A/B, i.e. Ceramics A/Ceramic B or Art History I/Art History II or similar.

If you are an OOS student, they are a little more lenient since they know that it might not be a requirement for graduation like it is here in CA.
