Adult/Student Parent Transfer (I’m old! - LOL)

Current school: 3 CCs/Bay Area

Major: Buss Admin/Haas

Work: Over ten years technical experience in the telecommunications industry (AT&T).
EC: Nothing outside of work; used professional activities.
AA Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences with Honors.
1 course left for AA Business Admin.
Current GPA 3.47 (includes courses not needed for Buss major).
I was told by UCB OUA that Haas doesn’t put much weight on GPA alone (what a relief!). They have more criteria than other colleges, where GPA could be a deal-breaker.

Other:
Full-time work, part-time school (11 units/3 courses this Spring), and a single mother.
Currently working on Int’l Studies requirement (Cultural Geog).
Repeating Engl 1A & Calc 1 (to meet no > 5 yrs requirement eventhough I’ve taken Calc 2 & 3).
Engl 7 (taken Spr 05) expires Spr '10- not sure if they’ll be nice enough to accept it :(

Being hopeful…

Really, they told you that you can appeal for Econ major??? When I asked them if I can submit an application for Econ major as well, I was told that Berkeley accepts 1 major per application/per year. If I don’t get into Haas this year, then that’s it but that I can reapply next year or reapply but choose another major. I wonder if the appeal works for UC to UC transfer only (?).

@brazilbrasil
I also applied as development studies for UCB, and I have a question about required forms in ucb update.
do you have “major prerequisite” form in ucb update forms? cuz I don’t have that and have just three forms(Unit/GE/WIP).
so I wonder that they don’t consider major prerequisite or not although requirements for this major are posted in assist.org.

@ amypoth

I actually told them that I wanted to switch the major I was applying for on my application from Haas to Econ. They said that it was too late (I was trying to do this in April LOL) and that I would now have to submit an appeal with that as the reason (I have the prereqs done for econ, not Haas)…after reading your post, I’m nervous as to whether I should believe what the admissions rep. said or not…I guess I’ll give them a call tomorrow…gosh I hate how they never give you a definitive answer/give you multiple answers/end up giving you the run around! Good luck to you though Amy! Your stats are quite impressive! I will let you know what they say :)

@ sandaboy

Thanks. I hope we wouldn’t need to submit any appeals…please let me know what they tell you next time. I joined almost all the chats & webinars for transfers. I also talked to OUA & Haas pre-admission counselors…OUA counselors were much nicer esp. Angela Skrivanich. Goodluck to you too!

Ahah, wow. Biggest pet peeve ever = Ignorance

@wooshuu - Wow, props to you. That is quite the impressive transcript!

I’ll post my stats while I’m at it…

From: SMC, SD Mesa

Does anyone know anything of development studies? Like, if it’s competitive and what not?

@ whoshuu

One word, sir: dayum!

@edelynly
I also applied as development studies.
did you get “major prerequisite form” in required forms of UCB update?
cuz I don’t have that form although there are requirements for this major, so I just wonder.

@ whoshuu

Sir, I think you are the smartest one here lol. Hopefully you get into Cal or UCLA with those genius stats.

@amypoth and sandaboy: I’m 99% sure that you can’t appeal to a different major. this isn’t UCLA. Econ is offered by a completely different college, L&S.

@amypoth: only 10% of those accepted to haas last year had a GPA less than 3.74. source: [Class Profile, Undergraduate Program - Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley](<a href=“Class Profile - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas”>Class Profile - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas)
what will make or break you will be ur essays, as they are 35% of the selection process.

@smile - I don’t remember any special forms…? What do you mean by ‘requirements’? I’ve completed all the ones on Assist.

CCC: Ohlone College

ECs: Work at NASA 24+ hours per week, PTK, Camp Counselor (outdoor ed if anybody went to it as a 5th grader), Basketball, track, and cross country (from my senior year when I started college), middle college, others that weren’t particularly important

Agree with you
I asked the question a few times. If I dont make it to Haas this year, then I have no other options but wait until next year or just give up They suggested that I apply for Econ instead of Haas if I feel that I have a better chance of getting in. I took the risk & applied for Haas.

My current 3.47 GPA includes a lot of other courses (such as for professional development, pre-requisites or lower division requirements for EECS) but if Id just count the ones required for Haas, I might have a 3.72 or 3.77 (excluding my 2 repeats & last 1 I need). I feel better about the other 50% of my application (Essays & Resume). Im keeping my fingers crossed & praying Hopefully, we see each other at Haas Goodluck!

I totally agree…well said…I prefer the term hard-working to smart, because it doesn’t downplay the perseverance it took to get those high grades…hmmm…maybe just being hardworking makes you smart ;)…of course, though, there are those people that are naturally geniuses:

[Shakuntala Devi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Shakuntala Devi - Wikipedia)

A lot geniuses are socially handicapped, trust me I worked in a building full of them and half of them couldn’t handle basic social interaction with non geniuses. It’s better to be hard working (and smart, hard work doesn’t make up for a complete lack of intelligence, just some lack)

@BeaverHunt

Good words of wisdom! I know I’m competing with many 4.0 applicants; however, Im very proud of my accomplishments in juggling family, work, and academic responsibilities. My officemate thinks I’m crazy to take 3 courses/11 units while working full-time & taking care of my son (8 turning 9). Her daughter is currently in college, taking 12 units, not working & lives in a dorm but getting a few B’s. I think Berkeley will see my perseverance. Also, I’m thankful that I have an inspiration. I just hope that I graduate before my son does - LOL.

sorry, i deleted the post because I thought i was being a little ‘preachy.’ I wish there wasn’t a 15 minute limit on edits! It drives me crazy sometimes

Ya, I agree with the whole hardworking thing vs. smart. With the GPA’s I’ve seen around here, I KNOW that any one of us could have had a 4.0 if we were willing to sacrifice more social interaction/videogames/etc. At least this is the way I know I am :/

I have many classmates that are in similar situations, amy. I am grateful every day for the chance to focus solely on my studies. I worked for my first year, but decided to take loans for the past year…HUGE difference. My brother has a 16 month old, and knowing how his life has changed makes me really respect people like you that are even able to keep their home running, let alone trying to find the mental space to focus on school work.

I am able to put 40+ hrs/week to school…my brother rarely gets that much time for himself in a month. Good luck and I hope admissions recognizes your passion.
