Does anybody know anything about taking your essays to Berkeley to have them critique it before you apply?
I know TAP does it on the CCC campus if you’re part of it.
@csmajortom Yes. The Cal Transfer Center (it’s in the Cesar Chavez Center, next to the SLC) is open to review personal statements Thursdays and Fridays until the end of October from 2-4, on a drop-in, first-come-first-serve basis.
They won’t do this in November, so act now.
I went to meet with an admissions person there and they were extremely helpful. Highly recommend going. Ask for your admissions officer’s card to be able to follow up with them.
@csmajortom I’ve heard those services are available, but I don’t know specifically where. As a start, though, you can stop by your CCC’s transfer or writing center. The transfer center will usually post when they’re doing workshops on essays, and the writing center will usually read through and critique … though all schools will be different.
I recommend the Cal Transfer Center as well. I met a lot of helpful people in there and they don’t cut corners when it comes to helping other transfers / potential transfers.
Good to know @goldencub.
@goldencub You say it’s first-come first-serve basis, but how hard is it to get a spot? Is it busy?
Hey does anyone know what I can do to improve my chances for Fall 2017? My major is genetics and plant biology (11.5% acceptance rate) or molecular environmental biology(9.8% ar). So I’m basically a part time student because I take care of my mom who is terminally ill. I have a 3.65 gpa but I still need 8 courses to transfer and I want to take a break after I’m done and transfer the following year so I can be there for her.
I completely screwed up my gpa in the spring because I got a C in general chemistry I and a B in biology I.
Would they check my entire transferable gpa or just my scientific gpa? I volunteer at most local state parks and animal sanctuaries/shelters.
I just don’t know what else I can do. I’m taking Physics I and Calc II right now.
Sorry if I’m all over the place.
@csmajortom I got there at 2 one day, and there was already about an hour’s delay. You will probably get seen if you go, but arrive early for sure.
@sugarbabies3 @by3000 LTCC was exactly what I was going to suggest. I believe you have until October 4th to add the class. Apply today and email the teacher explaining your circumstance. I did that with Coastline CC. I applied over the weekend, got my student ID# on Tuesday morning, e-mailed my transcripts the same day, and got an add code from the teacher on Tuesday night. It’s possible if you pursue it.
@goldencub @SDGoldenBear I was looking at doing that as well. Here is the link for those interested: http://transfers.berkeley.edu/transfer-drop-in-advising/
I have my essay complete-- what exactly do they help with?
Also, @goldencub you mentioned asking for your admissions officer’s card. Is that the person that will help you there or the person that will be in charge of your admissions? Kind of confused…
Found an old thread on Cal. It’s a doozy. You’ll be glad you clicked.
ENJOY:

Wow. 9 pages long, too.
@jonuni94 At the transfer center, they have what are arbitrarily called “admissions officers” that answer whatever questions you have. When you go in to talk to someone, you will be talking to an admissions officer.
They just help you with whatever - give you suggestions, fine-tuning, etc.
Hahaha @lindyk8 some of those posts on that thread are hilarious!
Ahhh I see, thank you. Will definitely look in to bringing my essay over to the Transfer Center then! I’m only about an hour away and another excuse to visit is always welcome aha @goldencub
@jonuni94 Leave ahead of time. Parking in Berkeley is horrendous - maybe plan to get lunch somewhere around 1, such that you’ll have enough time to find a parking spot, and the transfer center itself.
{I posted similar information in the UCLA transfer thread as well}
I spent my first semester of college at San Francisco State University, but I switched to a Los Angeles area CCC last semester.
Major: Economics
My cumulative GPA is 3.8 at the moment, but if all goes as planned it will be 3.86-89 by December. Major GPA: 4.0
Some of my college extracurriculars include–
-position in (CCC) student government: Senator of Business
-member of Alpha Gamma Delta (SFSU): sorority, required to participate in philanthropic activities
-member of Alpha Gamma Sigma: (CCC) academic honor society, community service organization
-member of (CCC) Environmental Club: concerned with sustainability within the school and community
-volunteer work for Hillary Clinton Political Campaign: fundraising event scheduled for the near future
-equestrian show jumping: national and international competitions from 9th grade-current. in high school was doing 5hrs a day, 6 days a week (x4 years), but due to a switch in focus towards academics am no longer putting in the same amount of time (aka very infrequent)
-internship Accounting: bookkeeping and financial statement analysis
-internship Marketing Strategies: ensure growth and success
So I’m applying to Berkeley as well as other schools but here are what I have so far… (I’m not the greatest with grades however).
Major: Business Administration
I add that I am a 1 year transfer: Graduated out of high school last year. My high school grades were terrible and I was caught up with the wrong type of crowd, and did drugs (Never got caught, however). I ended up with a REALLY low gpa in highschool, maybe borderline 2.2…
I am also diagnosed with ADHD, also happened late in my Junior year. Which was around the time when I got fed up with the teachers because they would treat me as a person suffering from a disease and could not do the things that “regular” people could so I started to dual enroll both in highschool and in college concurrently in my Junior year as a personal vendetta to prove them wrong.Took on average 3 classes each semester (Max I could take in HS) despite my counselor doubting me and telling me I couldn’t handle it.
GPA: =3.5-3.6 (Low… I know. But If all goes well, It might bump up a little in the winter and spring)
I currently take around 6 classes which is around 20+ credits and will take 2 courses in the winter and 6 again in the spring to complete my 1 year transfer.
Volunteering:
-Volunteering at URM (Homeless shelter) I go twice a week and its 5 hour shifts every time
-Volunteering at LA Mission (Also Homeless shelter) Same schedule as URM
-Volunteering at Animal Hospital (Volunteered a couple hours a week)
-Volunteering at Project Neo (Tutoring for HS/Elementary students) Also couple hours per week if I had the time
-Aids WALK volunteer for the past 3 years (Delineator)
Memberships:
-Phi Theta Kappa (A Honors Society based around CC’s)
-ASU Board Member
-Skillify (Based in Highschool) Went to conferences at USC and spoke with a panel of 6 Professionals, basically networking group
E.C:
-Church’s Basketball Team (1 Year)
-(Trying to land a internship at a local Chamber of Commerce)
Reading this, I know my chances are fairly low but one can only hope… How do I stand against the admissions?
@goldencub Will do, last time I visited I parked on the street with one of those meters. Did you actually park in some garage next to the Transfer center?
@sutt123 Is that 3.8 your ASSIST GPA (UC transferrable classes). From what I understand, they look at that GPA as well as your major GPA. Someone correct me if I’m wrong? Anyway, if it is… a 3.8 is solid although lower than some coming in with straight 4.0s in to Econ which worries me a bit. I’m also around your GPA.
@jonuni94 I avoid paying for parking, so I park in residential neighborhoods (free parking for 2 hours, sometimes you are able to stretch your time).
