Hey @goldencub, how is the course going? Philosophy is rigorous at Cal, but would you say pretty doable all in all or more like barely keeping your head above water?
Thx for the update.

Do they have a Cal Day for transfers students where we get to meet each other?
Also why are you doing philosophy? I get that it may be a good program at Berkeley and you like the topic… you could have done EECS and made bank. I saw a Berkeley post about how a less than stellar kid at Berkeley in EECS got 70 job offers w/19 of them above 120K… DUDDDEEEEEEEE… I actually wanted to be a math major, but got inspired by the EECS people/salaries.
Anyone in UCB’s TAP? If so, have you heard of any dates that we need to come in to do some workshops for applications? I was told we’d get an email this summer for a date in August, but August is almost here and just want to make sure nothing got lost in the inter webs/emails.
@EECSProdigy believe it or not, some of us don’t pick a major based on salaries. That includes many engineering majors as well. Shit talking another person’s major is such a toxic attitude to have. If that’s the level of maturity that you have then I wish you luck in the six courses you’re planning on taking. You’ll need it.
@lindyk8 It’s doable. Your daughter was considering a minor, right?
It’s definitely more demanding than a CC Philosophy course, but if one goes into it with the proper mindset (i.e. willing to work HARD, get all of the work done and do things ahead of time) then they’ll be fine.
The course I’m taking is really difficult, but I think that’s mostly because it’s a summer course. The material itself is better to learn during the semester, just because you have to be well-acquainted with a huge number of concepts and all of that. It’s really a terrible thing to take over the summer. That midterm just killed me, haha, hopefully there will be a curve to help me. If not, then I’m shooting for at least a B in the class, and I’m pretty sure I can get that. I was considering P/NPing it (I can p/np one of my 12 major requirements), but I don’t think I will.
I’ve heard other Philosophy courses are much easier than this one. There are plenty of people who find Symbolic Logic notoriously difficult. I really don’t think it’d be so bad.
@EECSProdigy Why would I do EECS? College shouldn’t be trade school. I can study whatever I want to study.
Also, on average, Philosophy majors score higher than any other majors on the LSAT. Being a Philosophy major does not equate to having a low salary. I’m definitely going to graduate school.
@EECSProdigy Why are you questioning other people’s majors? Why would someone want to do something they aren’t passionate about for the rest of their life? If your biggest inspiration to do EECS was the salary, good luck with that.
can somebody please link me to the UCLA fall 2016 transfer thread? thanks in advance.
@themightybicycle http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1769477-fall-2016-ucla-official-transfer-thread.html#latest
@goldencub yea you legit if you have graduate law school… I’m not judging anyone on here. I’m just wondering how people find such interests. Before this thread, I didn’t even know Berkeley had a philosophy major. Maybe it is because I am Indian and everyone I know does EECS/Engineering lol…
@briank82 Gina told me August 6th she would sent out the email and that there would be 3 opportunities to attend the seminars.
Guys, does berkeley offer regents scholarships for transfer students? If so how many get it?
@EECSProdigy Very very few people get it as transfer students. They consider the very top applicants. I don’t think you will even have a chance unless you have straight A’s and exemplary essays.
Okay… I have a 4.0 so far, so hopefully I can maintain that. My essays are not going to be really well-written, but I have a solid topic for my major-based essay. The other one is going to suck HARD…
Also where do you check how many credits you have out of 60? Is it just the number of credits your CC gives for the articulated class?
@EECSProdigy Yeah, it’s however many credits you have on your transcript from classes that are UC transferable (as long as your CC uses the semester system, otherwise you would have to convert).
My advice about the regents scholarship is to not expect to get it. I’m not saying you wont, but last year a bunch of us on here who had 4.0s had high expectations, and I don’t think any of us ended up winning it. I don’t know how exactly they select regents scholars, but it seems like it takes a lot of luck, even if you have a 4.0. Just keep that gpa up though and you have a shot.
Also I don’t know about you guys, but my college(college of engineering) only accepts 2 humanities ap tests… Now I have 4 ap humanities test scores that qualify… Will those extra two still give me credit, but not count as any particular class? I’m trying real hard to get to 60 units since I am a one year transfer.
thanks, dude
@EECSProdigy yes, they do! they differ with freshmen admissions, though. Freshmen will typically find out if they have been selected for regents a couple of months before they receive their notification of admission into Cal. We will find out after (if we’ve been admitted). Usually it’s the top 1-2% of the applicants.
Yes, they do. I forget how many overall get it. You don’t hear until after you are notified of acceptance.
@MikeSauce Cool, thanks! You recently spoke with her I’m assuming? I realized yesterday that there’s a UCB rep at my CCC today, so hopefully it’s her. That’s great to know those, thanks Mike. If I hear anything useful I’ll shoot you a message.
