UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

@htran15127 Your biggest obstacle is transferring from an out of state community college, which is low priority.

Beyond that, ECs in high school aren’t particularly relevant. And decent personal statements probably aren’t a huge boost.

I can’t see your chances being all that great, but that is common with most out of state community college transfer applicants.

CCC In-State Transfer
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.81, I got a C in Stats, my only class that I did not get an A.
Major GPA: 4.0
TAG: UCI
IGETC: Finishing up this spring
Major Prereqs: All completed
ECs: Student Ambassador
Member of the Honors Club
Member of the Multicultural Club
I did a political Internship for the campaign of CA State Senator Tony Mendoza
Letter of Recommendation from CA State Senator Tony Mendoza
Volunteering at a convalescent home (That doesn’t really apply to my major)
I also put one EC from High School: Model United Nations (I put it since it integrates with the International Relations branch of Political Science)
Essays: They’re stellar! I put so much time and effort in them. I made so many drafts and got them reviewed by several counselors, professors, and family members. I also got my essays read by a UCI admissions officer. 9.5 or 9/10
I’m worried due to my GPA, but I feel that my extracurriculars and most importantly my essays are my strong points.
Chance me please.

@briank82 Hey, thanks for the comments!
I do see those flaws, so my hopes aren’t high already. However, I’m also applying to UCSD; what do you think my chances are in terms of UCSD instead of Cal or UCLA.

Any idea how competitive a junior English transfer is?

@htran15127 In general, out of state transfers are a much lower priority than those transferring from a California community college. Trying to transfer into UCSD instead of Cal or UCLA will improve your chances, but it’s still an uphill battle coming from out of state as the UC system is designed to benefit those within the state of California. It’s not impossible though, but I really can’t give you any sort of probability.

Any idea how competitive a junior transfer is for an English major? I’m also from an out-of-state college…

Do they check your application at all before the TAU? because in my comments about why I dropped a class I said something, that I’d like to change but I dont want it to be held against me

Hi! I was wondering if there is a transfer unit cap for UC Berk? I read somewhere we can’t go over 80 units for junior transfers, but I am wondering if I read that wrong.

Can someone chance me? Thank you in advance!

CCC Transfer

IGETC: Finishing Spring

Essays: They are pretty okay. 9/10–It’s very authentic and I’ve had a lot of unfortunate circumstances occur in my life; however, I focused on how I overcame them.
Other UC’s applied: UCI, UCLA, UCSB

I’d say you have a solid shot, @nerdygirl7576. The infocenter says you’d be on the lower end of the accepted spectrum gpa wise, but your ec’s are top notch and if you essays are good as you suggest you should be accepted.

@mywifeisUM Sorry, I didn’t take AP Chem, but yes, you should follow the AP credit guide from Berkeley for Engineering majors. Sorry for the confusion. I think you’re following the right steps by following the guide that you mentioned. Like if it tells you what score translates into how much college credit and what class it would cover.

The link that you’re using: http://engineering.berkeley.edu/academics/undergraduate-guide/exams-ap-ib-level-and-transfer-credit-information

It would make sense regardless that they would take a 3 because I know that’s a hard science and a difficult class in comparison to AP English, and the one I just mentioned is the only one I took.

In general, keep using the engineering AP guide, and you should be ok. Sorry for any confusion again and good luck with admissions.

@Ryan1812 Did you finish the CS series listed on assist?

Wow everyone have super good ECs… Weap… :-S :-S

How competitive is Berkeley for the “Computer Science, Lower Division B.A.”?. Is this a new thing, last time I looked on assist I didn’t see this/ the requirements for CS were much lengthier…Can someone shed some light on this for me?

Thank you @Orangered123

@Twenmi There is CS under the College of Letters & Science, which is a BA and then there’s Electrical Engineering and CS (EECS) under the College of Engineering, which is a BS.

Both are competitive and difficult to get into.

@briank82 I guess I’m more confused on the requirements. I thought I could have sworn that Berkeley’s CS reqs and UCLA reqs were very similar but now I look again and UCB doesn’t require Physics for CS BA?

Hey, for the “Transfer Academic Update”, were any of you guys able to fill out those “Mandatory Forms” required by Berkeley because they aren’t showing up on my Berkeley Portal? I was only able to complete the TAU on the UC application itself.
