Chance me maybe?
Major: Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Joint Major
GPA: 3.95
Major GPA: 4.0 ( with one w in an egnlish class which I retook this fall and got an A in)
Prereqs: Finished!, including a strongly recommended engineering course, also had AP scores which got me past Calc 1 and Calc 2
IGETC: done
ECS: College swim team, AMATYC school winner (CC math exam), Engineering Club, Math Club, MESA, LIfeguard, swim team coach, Trumpet player for 9 years (all state, all district honor bands, etc.)
Essays: 9/10, talked about being an italian immigrant to this country, and how my identity was shaped by the two countries I grew up
Applied to: UCLA, UCI (tag), UCB, and UCSD
@calyoooo
UC system is focused on accepting transfer students from CCC. Transfer within UC system is low percentile chance. Non-CCC transfer from good 4 year school is shot in the dark. Absent some extraordinary circumstance, it’s rare. UMICH Engineering CS is about as good as it gets in US. Since you are just finishing your first academic year at UMICH, you could transfer to Diablo Valley CC and do a second year there and then apply to Cal from that CCC. You’d have a better chance of getting admitted than you do as transfer from UMICH. Also, you’d be in California. Sometimes you have to take a step back to make the right moves. Good luck.
I think you’re really solid for admissions into that major! You seem like a well rounded candidate IMO.

Your GPA is well above those who were admitted for Fall 2015. I really hope you get in!
Care to chance me back?

@BoredEngineer You are correct, the average minimum transfer GPA for admission to Berkeley is around 3.6-4.0
Hey everyone, I’ve heard that Berkeley admits by “college” (ex: Letters and Sciences, Haas, etc). Does this mean that they don’t take the major you applied for into consideration until you declare it?
I applied to the Soc major, but now I find myself wishing I had applied to Media Studies instead because they have a higher acceptance rate for the major, according to https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
@doihaveashot2016 I applied as Anthropology, and apparently it’s a bit harder to get into than I thought… I only have about a 24% chance, which is lower compared to the other majors. I still don’t understand how they do it either – don’t they have to accept a certain number of Anthropology students?
@doihaveashot2016 You should apply for the major you want, not what will simply get you in.
@enpz45 I have, and the message is kinda vague enough to apply to both sides. What’s your interpretation of: "175 and 176 combined: maximum credit, 5 semester/7.5 quarter units
176 is a combination of 175 (College Algebra) and 170 (Analytic
Trygonometry) "
The obvious answer would look like it’s only worth 5 credits, but is it with 175 and 176 combined? Why would 175 be 5 credits when the chart above (not in quote, but in assist itself) says it’s only 4 units? In that same chart, it lists 176(what I took) as 6 units too, so i’m so lost and confused, haha
@doihaveashot2016 I am in Media Studies. You cannot switch into it after the fact. However, you can switch into other L&S non-impacted majors, assuming you have req completed. Soc and MS are so similar, you should 't have an issue. The big plus with MS is because the dept is so small, your required and elective course list is all over the map, so you can draw from History, Soc, Psych, Anthro, Econ, Haas, etc. and have priority registration. I’ve taken a ton of Haas courses.
I did just look. You’re right. There’s a big difference in admit rate. If you have a strong GPA, it should be OK. But I hear ya.
@Kozmos2050 it has to do with how many apply. Popular majors have more applications, so they a larger pool to pick from. This results in a higher GPA admit range and a lower admit rate.
Example:
100 apply, 50 accepted. That’s a 50% admit rate.
200 apply, 50 accepted. That’s a 25% admit rate.
@Ohm888 I see. Thank you for explaining! So they don’t just accept applicants based on the college, but based on the major and how impacted it is.
I’m worried because Sociology definitely has a lower acceptance rate than Media Studies, but at the time of application, I had a 3.63 GPA and noticed that the lower range of GPA for Media Studies was higher than my GPA at the time. I now have a 3.68 (which still isn’t too strong), as I got all A+'s last semester, but I didn’t believe I could do so! I seriously wish I had applied to Media Studies instead. Oh well, whatever happens, happens.
You get accepted into L&S but are essentially bookmarked into that major, meaning you have been accepted to it, unless there is still a pre-req you need to finish. (You’re still accepted, unless you mess up the pre-req.) If you decide to switch, you need to get dept approval.
@Ohm888 Is Cog Sci considered and impacted major?
@Kozmos2050 cog sci has a 26% admit rate according to https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
@Ohm888 I will have completed all prereqs by the end of this semester, so there’s that! I just don’t know where I heard that Berkeley is different from other UCs in that it accepts by college.
For all intents and purposes you’re earmarked for the major, which in your case is sociology. You will get accepted into soc or you won’t get in at all. Easy as that. Once in, you can conceivably make a switch, or you declare soc. Consider your acceptance into Soc as a placeholder, or pre-acceptance. I suspect it is set up this way due to paperwork.
does anyone have any info on switching to CS (L&S) once you get accepted, if you applied to the college of L&S? I heard rumors that they weren’t making it possible to switch to that major.
@StrawberryWaffle From my perspective I’d say you’re good. I think that colleges will go with what assist says vs. your college rubric. So if I’m reading your comment right you’d have 10 credits total from the 4 + 6. It wouldn’t hurt if you talked to a counselor tho. Telling the appeal committee that enpz45 told me I’m good probably won’t hold as much weight as it should. /s
@ohm888 Thank you for your insight! Regretting my decision, but it’s too late now. Hopefully my personal statements are strong enough, but I guess we’ll all find out on April 28th.
@justinmega1 I have no idea! You could always try calling the school.
Been reading your posts. Just wanted to say supposedly Berkeley takes ECs and personal statements very seriously. I applied for the engineering school with a 3.68 UC Transferable GPA and a 3.69 Major GPA with strong ECs and personal statements. Alot of my counselors and professors (2 of them being Berkeley alums) say while my GPA is low for the engineering school my strong ECs, familial circumstances explaining my mediocre GPA and personal statements will earn me a spot for Fall 2017. I’m skeptical but thats what I’ve been told so far…
I hope you get into the school. I have my fingers crossed for the both of us!
Hi! Could someone maybe chance me? I can repost stats from my earlier comment
