@genieforuboi right. It will not affect TAG
@Ohm888 Thank you for the clarification.
@genieforuboi I wrote specifically about studying business at Haas. The first sentence of my first personal statement was “My interest in studying Business Administration at UC Berkeley developed as a result of…”
I also applied to some form of econ at UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Diego. Despite my personal statements being specifically for business at Berkeley and not mentioning econ once, especially considering one of the prompts was “What is your intended major?..”, I was accepted to all 4 programs.
My essays were geared specifically for Haas. Conclusion of both essays spoke to Haas. Intro in one of them mentioned Haas. Both as a whole mentioning Berkeley and Haas numerous times.
I have a couple of questions about the transfer application and I’m curious whether these two factors have any effect on my chance for admission:
1.) Does it matter if I haven’t been enrolled full time for multiple quarters? I had a lot of AP credits satisfy IGETC so I’ve only been full time for 2 of the 5 quarters enrolled at community college.
2.) How much do pre-req classes matter? For me, I’ve completed IGETC but completed my first pre-requisite class in Spring quarter (with an A-). I’m currently taking two more pre-requisite classes this quarter. My major is English and GPA is 3.8.
@briank82 interesting. I wonder, since Haas is so competitive, if the other UCs figure your chance of admittance could go either way.
@briank82, interesting. Thanks for the information. However, did you also apply to UCLA? Because as far as i know, UCLa is also known to read personal statements, although they may not be as “holistic” as berkeley.

They like to see full time, but you’ll have an opportunity to explain why you weren’t going to full time. If you can make it make sense to them, I’d guess they wouldn’t hold it against you.

Pre-reqs are important. Are you talking about completing them all, or completing them early in the application? I’m not sure how important with the english major specifically, but many majors at Berkeley you really aren’t considered without them all. In my opinion, it’s also a red flag if you don’t have a full-time course load but are missing pre-reqs. Clearly you had time to do it, you just didn’t.
@Ohm888 It definitely was interesting. Not sure how or what the other UC’s considered, but would be interesting to hear.
@genieforuboi I didn’t apply to UCLA. I kind of wish I did just to see what would have happened, but my application would have been sent to them like it was everyone else … targeted to Haas. I probably would have applied to Biz Econ there which is also pretty competitive, so who knows how that could have gone.
@briank82 I work 20-30 hours a week so that’s why I’ve been mostly part time. As for the pre-requisites, what I mean is that by the end of Fall quarter, I will have only taken 3 courses at my community college that are transferable for the lower division major requirements at Berkeley. I plan on taking the remaining 4 courses that transfer for the lower division major requirements in the winter and spring quarter. I’ve completed IGETC, just not all of the lower division major requirements.
I checked the assist website for UC Berkeley, and it says A minimum 3.2 Grade Point Average in the following math courses, with no lower than a C in each:
Math 1A Calculus
Math 1B Calculus
Math 53 Multivariable Calculus
Math 54 Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
I got a D in my Calculus class, but I retook it and end up with the A. Am I still satisfied with the requirement?
@briank82 @locampo
is it necessary to have prereq done by the time I apply in fall??? I will be done with my prereq in my Spring semester as my school goes with semester.
Also, those 60-80 credit includes my AP credit. right?? If yes, although It is my first year at college, I might need to apply this fall because I have like 30 AP credit.
@mywifeisUM What program are you applying to?
@briank82
College of Engineering.
@jw77777 You should be fine. To be extra sure I would file academic renewal within your school.
@mywifeisUM I overlooked some of what you originally said. As long as it’s done by the end of spring, you’re fine. They like to see some pre-reqs done by the end of fall so they can see how you do, but so long as you aren’t saving them all for your last semester you should be fine.
@briank82
AP scores also count, right??
I am getting out of most pre req with AP scores and I will have to apply this year for transfer if ap credits count although I am in my first year at college
They should, I believe. I didn’t have any and haven’t had a need for much knowledge about them … so my experience is limited.
@briank82
Thanks for giving me all these answers…
@briank82 Just one more question. I am out of state student and are below the only prerequisite for me?? I am not applying to EECS, so I don’t think they have any other prerequisite.
Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC transferable college credit with a GPA of at least 2.4 (no more than 14 semester/21 quarter units may be taken Pass/Not Pass),
and;
2.Complete the following course pattern requirement, earning a grade of C or better in each course:
• Two transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) in English composition (Area UC-E),
and;
•One transferable college course (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units) in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning (Area UC-M),
and;
• Four transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each)chosen from at least two of the following subject areas: the arts and humanities (Area UC-H), the social and behavioral sciences (Area UC-B), and the physical and biological sciences (Area UC-S).
To be honest, I’m not sure.
Go to assist.org and see what they say for requirements for a specific major. Choose a few random community college’s and see what it says. Note that this is ONLY for transferring from a California community college to Cal, but it will give some insight into pre-reqs.
It sounds correct though.
