UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

@lakergirl6232 Good theory, but I’m not so sure. My D has ELC and ELS and did not receive the email. She applied to COC and waiting for March decision.

@Suave123 Weird that your D got the email and mine didn’t, right?

What Does Eligibility in the Local Context vs. State Context even mean?

D got the “Meet the Students: First Year Pathways” email yesterday, she applied to L&S.

@collegemom111111 she applied to L&S, maybe that’s the reason

Does anyone know if admission is more competitive when applying to COC vs. L&S?

ELS is a UC program that if your child is in the top 9% of their class (in-state) they are guaranteed a spot at least one UC school. It doesn’t mean they will get into their first choice but they will get into at least one. I have heard the UC Merced is usually the fall back in this offering. My D got the email and she is ELS.

“ELS” is if your child is in the top 9% of all students in the state of CA per the UC website on ELS. ELC" on the other hand is if your student is in the top 9% of their high school in CA. ELC is given more weight. I know because I have twins, one who is ELC and one who is ELS. The one who is ELC got special invitations to UC receptions and special emails about applying, etc.

I think all these theories make equal sense, and seem valid. But, at least its not based on narrowing apps down on their admissions decision/status.

I did mine… But my stats weren’t too stellar compared to your guys. I know I won’t be admitted. It was worth a shot.

I also got sent two Letters of Recommendations to Berkeley!

Stats:
GPA: 3.55 Weighted, 3.33 Unweighted
SAT:1150
Extracurriculars’: Leadership Council, President(walked for Suicide Prevention, biggest event I’ve planned), Asian Pop Dance Team (Audio Producer/Management), Ichiban Dance Team (Japanese Cultured- Audio Producer and Manager/Choreographer),and All Male/Coed Dance Team.
AP Exams: English Language and Composition (2), Calculus AB (4)
Major: Computer Science

Essay Topics

  1. How I took initiative and became an audio producer for my dance teams for all 4 years.
2.How I developed songwriting. How it started as a minor hobby and turned into a passion. (Using singing as a way to keep myself occupied while facing homelessness)
  2. My pursuits on becoming a software engineer because of the love of android.
  3. How I came out to my father and how I exponentially grew from that experience both psychologically and academically.

@OhWelp32 Did what?

Also, regarding the ‘subjective’ aspects of your app, they’re great and definitely UCB level IMO. Regarding your ‘objective app aspects’, I’d say the SAT seems a bit red-light-ish, but your GPA is fine, especially if you had some circumstances to explain why/took hard classes.

I know someone who got in UCB (class of '21) with a 3.3 UW GPA, so there’s no worry in that regard, since that doesnt break the deal in your case. I dont know regarding the SAT though, but it definitely doesnt break the deal. I think he had a 29 ACT which is 1290-1320 SAT.

Best of luck, and nothing’s off reach unless you fail a class.

Hope this helps!

Can you chance my DS? He’s been accepted at UCSB (w/ College of Creative Studies application pending there), and to UCI Honors (and the U. of Michigan and also RIT) so far:

  1. GPA 4.0 (UW); 4.3 (UC)
  2. SAT 1560 (1 time; 760 RW; 800 Math)
  3. SAT Subject tests (Math 2: 800; Physics: 800; Chemistry: 780)
  4. AP Chem exam: 5
  5. 4 APs (including now in 12th grade), including AP Chem, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics-C and AP Gov/Econ
  6. National Honor Society; National Merit Commended (missed cut-ff by 2 points)
  7. ECs: Pres. of Physics club & co-pres. of Jam club; member of Jazz club, math club & science olympiad; Scholar Quiz team captain (4 yrs); Honors Jazz Band & ensembles; Lunches with Love charity (3 yrs); All-Star guitarist (has gone on 2 music tours & played with Dweezil Zappa and guitarist for Megadeth at Dweezil’s concert in Los Angeles); played at Lollapalooza twice
    8.Planned major: physics

Thanks!

@TheGuy1 Sorry. I meant to say, I also submitted my app. I was sleepy and it was like 3am. ??

@OhWelp32 Ah.Gotcha Nvm.

@lakergirl6232 There should be a separate forum for this (Chance me UCB), i think, but giving my thoughts on this, I’d say everything falls in place for an acceptance, but you never know with schools like UCB (top schools). They’ll take someone else in even though theres full qualification, due to their plans of forming a particular years class (or due to ‘no good fit’ thoughts on their end)

It depends on the essays as well.

Is the 4.3 the UC calculated GPA? If so, thats great as well!

Hope this helps!

Again, I know someone with a 3.3 UW GPA and a 29 ACT, no SAT IIs and decent essays and EC’s who got in (no hooks, URM, donor status). It all depends.

What the notification date will be?

@alwalw On the Cal portal: “On or before March 28.”

Regarding the FPF email, I’d applied for L&S and got the email. I’d asked around and two of my friends, who also applied to L&S, did not get the email.

Not really banking much hope on this email but not all L&S received this email for those who want to know.

@faithdragons Are you referring to the personal stories FPF email, or is there another new one LOL?

I got the FPF email but not the New Year’s Email

The FPF email that was sent out like late feb.

BTW - I’d asked some more friends & kinda dug into it and pretty much all L&S applicants receive the email so for it being an “informal acceptance” is pretty unlikely imo.

@faithdragons THis has been confirmed in the previous responses on this thread.

But who’s targeted by the adcom through this mail is still unknown
