UC Berkeley 2023 Applicants Thread

i have 2 addresses now oh lord

Mine was 4 and then 2 and now 4 lmao

noticed the change at least 3 times in the last 4 months that we know of. doesnā€™t seem like an indication of anything

UC Berkeley gives no official confirmed hints/admissions decisions other than the R+C scholarship invite, MET acceptance, the GMP acceptance (all in feb) and the 3/28 others notification of decisions.

Note: Conclusion: 1 goddamn change in address structure doesnt translate to a good/bad admissions decision. How does that even work?

Can somebody tell me if I have a chance of getting into Berkeley after being waitlisted by both UC Davis and UCSB.

@collegebound2023 it is certainly possible, each UC has their own admittance criteria and it is not a hierarchical acceptance structure. My kid got waitlisted for UCSD and UCI and got accepted to Berkeley last year, as an example.

@ProfessorPlum168 if you donā€™t mind me asking what was your kidā€™s stats. I am kind of freaking out over here right now and I am incredibly stressed. BTW thank you for your positive reply. ??

@collegebound2023 my kid had a 3.76 UC unweighted, a 4.05 UC weighted capped and a 4.5 UC weighted uncapped GPA. So a pretty pedestrian GPA by UCB standards. He did have a 1540 SAT, 35 ACT, 10.5 AP classes and had good ECs and probably a pretty good set of PIQs. He applied to CS everywhere, he got accepted to UCB (L&S not CoE) UCD (CoE) and UCSB (CoE), got waitlisted by UCI and UCSD and rejected by UCLA. He had no safeties as the rest of his schools that he applied for were all Top 30-ish type of schools.

I have a 4.4 UC GPA and got a 1340 SAT score ? my chances arenā€™t looking too bright.

Isnā€™t 4.4 UC gpa the Max?

Wow I have a 3.96/4.21 GPA, 1390 SAT, 28 ACT. Im really screwed.

Berkeley is really holistic. Itā€™s not all about scores. Donā€™t lose hope!!!

Yeah thatā€™s right, UCB is pretty holistic in evaluations from what I can tell. Yes, if you were applying for CoE you probably wouldnā€™t have much of a chance with those SAT scores, but for L&S, the 25% percentile is 1360 I think, so with a high GPA you probably are still ok. Good essays and good ECs and high rigor will make up for some of the stats as well.

I got rejected from UCSB and waitlisted Davis but my stats seem pretty suitable for the schools so idk.

I heard the UC schools value the UC gpa more than other components due to the large pool and their need to segregate, evaluate and decide on each specific school with different selectivity?

I doubt the process is as holistic as other top schools, like Ivies, tech schools, or academic powerhouses like Stanford.

For those mentioning getting waitlisted to schools, Iā€™m hoping youā€™re not giving up the fight!Go that one extra step if they are asking, like I believe most schools ask for an essay wanting to know what youā€™ve done since applying and why you still want to go there. Take a little time and submit those! I think my older son regrets not doing that for UCD after several people got in off waitlist, and my younger son got into UCB off waitlist. I feel it really helps them weed out who really wants to be there and if you want a spot, prove it to them! You came this far and worked this hard, whatā€™s 1 more essay when it could really showcase your drive?

@ProfessorPlum168 Just curious about how to calculate the UC GPAā€™s (UC unweighted, UC weighted capped, UC weighted uncapped)? I think a link was previously posted but I recall it didnā€™t account for all my Dā€™s course types? Besides AP courses, she also had numerous DE courses, ranging from 1 - 4 credit hours? How would I convert that to high school courses for sake of UC GPA calculation? No big deal if too complicated/time consuming to answer. Thank you!

@megaserendipity

Thereā€™s a linked page or 2 suggesting how, and having a calc feature.

Also, Thereā€™s a video issued by UCSB, but all UC calc UC GPA the same way.

Thats linked in previous posts too.

I posted this on the UC page, but if you watch this training video on the selection process of UCLA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snNPFl1PJNE you will noticed at around 40:00 that someone asks about the weighted and capped UC GPA. The admissions officer says UCLA and most ā€œother selective UCā€™sā€ do not use the weighted and capped GPA anymore. That it is from a bygone era. I think the Weighted and Capped is still very well used to compare UCā€™s from campus to campus, but it might not be used, or used as much as some suggest on these threads. It is obviously more important to all of us how the selection is made, not how the schools are compared. It looks like at least at UC they take unweighted GPA and number of semesters of honors courses.

It would be great if all the UCā€™s could have a detailed video about the selection process they use and which of the 14 UC selection criteria they use.

My mom is convinced that since I was rejected from Davis and SB thereā€™s a higher chance I got into Berkeley or LA, is there any truth to this or am I correct for assuming Iā€™m not getting into any UC?. (I have a 3.93 weighted capped UC gpa (4.1 fully weighted UC gpa) and a 32 ACT) so idk what to do
