Hi everyone… in the Berkeley a-g requirements, I saw history given over there. However, since I will be taking the IB curriculum, I can’t take that course without sacrificing another subject. So, can you please tell me any alternative ways to take the course? (I am an american citizen in India)
And, I’ve seen several students with a true laundry list of brilliant achievements. How can they incorporate all of these into a resume with limited spots?
In addition, I’ve (I’m a sophomore) been published in several journals and peer reviewed magazines (8-9). These are print journals. How can I show this to college admission officers?
I’m pretty sure this is a question for your counselor.
But, at least where I live, completing the A-G requirements is a MUST to even be considered for UCB.
Maybe your counselor will tell you what to do as I am not familiar with your situation.
For the magazines, just write it on your UC App under EC’s.
This is from the UC website on how to satisify the History requirement:
A) History/social studies
UC-approved high school courses::
Two years of history/social science, including:
one year of world history, cultures and geography (may be a single yearlong course or two one-semester courses), and
one year of U.S. history or one-half year of U.S. history and one-half year of civics or American government
SAT Subject Test::
U.S. History: Score of 550 satisfies one year.
World History: Score of 540 satisfies one year.
AP or IB examination::
U.S. History: score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP U.S. History exam;
score of 5, 6 or 7 on the IB History of the Americas HL exam
U.S. Government: Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Exam satisfies a half year.
World History/Cultures/Geography: score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam in European History, World History or Human Geography; score of 5, 6 or 7 on the IB History HL or Geography HL exam
College courses::
U.S. History/Civics/American Government: grade of C or better in a transferable course of 3 or more semester (4 or more quarter) units in U.S. history, civics or American government
World History/Cultures/Geography: grade of C or better in a transferable course of 3 or more semester (4 or more quarter) units in world history, cultures and geography
Are you saying your IB program offers no history at all?
You can try to list the pubs as space is available with the most important or most recent first. They couldn’t possibly get through huge lists of everything a student does.
You can also choose to talk about it in your personal statement or the 2nd essay prompt.
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
From http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/options-satisfying-a-g.pdf, page 4 “Advising Students with Some or All International Coursework”:
*International Only Courses: In lieu of U.S. History, the history of the home country is acceptable. When no history of
home country course is available, students should complete other history or social science courses for this requirement. Two years of history/social science coursework is required.
**Mixed – US & International Courses: If graduating from a U.S. high school, a U.S. History course, or one semester of U.S. History and one semester of U.S. Government is required, in addition to one year of World History/Geography/Cultures.
