You’ve probs already seen a myriad of posts similar to this, but im sure one more won’t hurt. I’d like to give a few stats regarding my test scores and academic history, and hear your opinions on my chances of getting into UC Berkeley. I’m OOS. GPA: 4.6 (4.0 unweighted). Act: N/A SAT (new scale): 1400. Taken all AP/Dual/Honors classes. Could only take 2 AP tests junior year due to financial setbacks: 4 & 5 (taking 2 more this year). Took 2 subject tests: scores not available yet. EC: SCA Pres., NHS Pres., Spanish club 9th-12th grade, Student Leadership Council, competitive equestrian, managing editor for school newspaper 9th-12th grade, and Virginia Institute for Marine Science volunteer (weekly). Not EC but I’m also in the gifted program, and have attended Girls State and HOBY(big programs in my state). I was born in CA but of course, am not a resident anymore.
Personal insight statements are about someone close to me being incarcerated, marine life affecting my career path, how HOBY inspired me to be a leader, and my passion for equestrianism. I am a white female. I’d say that is the gist of “who I am” so give me your thoughts. Be honest, not cruel.
I’d say you have a good chance. Congrats on that GPA which means a lot in Berkeley admissions. Now work on those essays! Your EC’s are great! You have lots of diversity and demonstrate leadership in a number of areas. Also what UCB looks for. If you can, get those SAT scores up, if not I’d say you are in contender position for sure, but unfortunately, UCB is a reach for all! Good Luck and circle back and let us know how you made out. To what major are you applying? Bio?
I’d say you have a good chance. Berkeley cares more about your high school grades and rigor (compared to the other students at your school) than any other university in the nation. 98 percent of the entering class was in the top 10 percent of their high school class. People who just compare standardized test scores have no idea how hard it is to get in to Berkeley (and UCLA). Just being a good student and prepping for the SATs will not do it.
You have stellar grades and decent rigor. You have a decent shot at Berkeley. Good luck.
I agree you are a competitive applicant and your parents are OK with paying $55-60K/year to attend?
You may be competitive for the Regents’ and Chancellor’s scholarship. Yes, OOS students are considered.
Regents and Chancellor scholarships are very competitive and will not offer a substantial amount towards your OOS costs around $2500/year. About 200 applicants receive these awards.
Thank you! I actually studied for 2 hours, 3 times a week for 3 months to get that score… big hurdle for me I guess so it’s what I’m sticking with! Thanks for the feedback! My major is actually English- minor in pre law- and then it’s off to law school!!
bump
Hmm, remember to maintain your GPA during undergraduate and test well on LSAT for law school.
The Regents and Chancellor’s are a drop in the bucket. California is under political pressure to admit and fund their own residents. Can you afford this school?
Yes. Also, I forgot to mention that I’m 3/428. I’m not sure how to calculate my UCB GPA as the explanation on their website isn’t clear to me.
