UC Berkeley and Cornell?

I have two dream schools: UC Berkeley and Cornell. My major is engineering and I haven't found any other colleges that inspire me as much as Berkeley and Cornell do, but the big question is: can I get in?

I have a 4.00 unweighted GPA, 4.11 weighted (which will rise after next year). So far, I have taken AP Euro, Calc, Chem, and Lang with 4's on Euro and Chem and 5's on Calc and Lang. Next year I plan to take AP Stats, Government, and Physics, while taking freshman college writing courses and post-AP Calculus math at the local community college.

I am president of National Honor Society and Japanese National Honor Society. I have volunteered as a DJ at a local, nonprofit radio station since my freshman year. My work experiences lies at a local pool where I lifegaurd year-round. Another way I make money is by tutoring AP Chem students.

Extracurricular wise, I have done 4 years of both school water polo and am currently captain (3rd at state last year, likely 2nd this year), 3 years of club water polo as a founding member, 2 years of varsity swim team, two years of varsity ultimate frisbee (2nd at coed and boys state). I was also part of the elite band and won both state and the National Heritage Foundation competition in LA my sophomore year.

My SAT score is a 2200 (800 Math, 720 Reading, 680 Writing) and my ACT is a 33 with a 10 in writing. SAT IIs are 760 Math II and 720 Chem.

Last month, I traveled to Japan for 3 weeks on exchange and I plan to use that as a launching point for most essays as I have stuck with Japanese since freshman year through classes, Japanese National Honor Society, tutoring, and the trip.

So, how do you like my chances? Any suggestions? Thanks for any input you can provide!

You have amazing chances! Definitely both are reaches, but you still are extremely qualified and competitive. )I guess you COULD retake the SAT to get 2300+ but that’s not 100% necessary.)

Good luck! :)

Cornell - Reach

Thanks for the input!

UC Berkeley- Match/high match
Cornell- low reach/reach

good luck!
please chance back!

Your scores/rigor/gpa are fine. Your problem is your ec’s. I like the president of NHS, but there’s thousands of other kids with the same type of ec. If you want to do engineering, you need something to stand out, like an internship of some sort. I would say
Berkeley: low reach
Cornell: reach

Trust me, at these high-caliber schools, that’s about the best you could be chances-wise.

UCB is not a reach school.

UCB is a good school but it is not difficult to get in.

Thanks for chancing me!

i think you have a good shot at both, however i do know at cornell, you could have amazing scores and everything and still not get in. with cornell, they’re looking for the “perfect fit.” in other words, they want your ecs and stuff to reflect your interest in engineering.

UCB: high match
Cornell: reach
