Sigh, such a bad day. I just got TWO rejections today: Cornell and Haas. For Cornell, it's understandable because I think they're protecting their yield. But for Haas, I'm not sure why... Maybe you guys can help shed some light. I'm planning to appeal and I'm wondering if it's worth to try? My stats:

Sophomore, transferring as a Junior (86 semester units total)
California Community College
GPA: 4.0
Pre-reqs & Breadth reqs : All done (9/9)
ECs:
- VP Business Club
- ICC Rep Math Club
- Treasurer English Club
- Treasurer Accounting Club
- Honors Newsletter Editor and writer
- Intern at a Hedge Fund company
- Paid Math Tutor
- Won 7 scholarships (Totaling around $4000-$5000 cash) from various honors research conferences
- Fundraiser through running a marathon

Essays: I think it was pretty strong. I chose the cultural difference thingy and talked how living in three different countries have shaped my views with regards to international business. I also mentioned how my unique background can contribute to Haas' diversity.

I'm an **International Student/B.

I'm seriously bummed. My professors didn't even believe me until I showed them my rejection screen :/

What I'm planning to do for my appeal is to get a letter from my intern place, as well as a recommendation letter from a professor. I also did not mention 2 out of the 7 scholarships I received because it was after the 30 Jan. deadline. I am taking 23 semester units to complete my IGETC this semester too, so perhaps they're worried about that. But I'm getting all As, so I'm also planning to submit a grade report.

I'm also wondering whether they will tell me the cause of my rejection if I call them?

I would say definitely appeal man. I got into haas with a 3.83, 30 hrs/week work over the last two years, no real ECs beyond PTK. I did write some of the best essays I’ve written though…my supplemental was about selling out a freind, good stuff. Anyways, give it a shot, you appear more than qualififed, and if they still reject you, at least you know that you were good enough, Haas is just bizzare.

I’m really curious of their reason for rejecting me. Is it possible that there are some kind of error or something? One of my friend was rejected by UCLA, but she had similar status to mine. She went to UCLA and asked why. It turns out that her application was messed up and didn’t get reviewed. Yesterday she got an e-mail telling her that she was accepted. I wonder if they did the same thing to mine.

I read on the FAQ that they wouldn’t talk about individual cases, but there’s no way I can go up there tomorrow… Hopefully they would tell me why.

My friend, who is an international student, was rejected from haas today as well. She also has a 4.0 and ridiculous, ridiculous ECs. Her essay was amazing. I really feel for her.

Yeah, 4.0 seems to guarantee nothing. If you have above a 3.8, you have your foot in the door, and from there, it’s all about the essay and ECs. I really feel for you, Cr3sc3nt and wish you the best of luck.

Just giving an update about this one. I called Haas on Friday and was told that they don’t discuss individual cases. I asked whether my international student status was a disadvantage for me and they answered, “As an international student, you’re given less priority than residents and therefore, at a disadvantage. Furthermore, the Haas School of Business barely admitted any international students this year.”

They also discouraged me from appealing, because Haas has never overturned any decisions before. Sucks to be me I guess, rejected because of international student status. But oh well, looks like I’m going to be a bruin.

Crescent, honestly don’t feel too bad. It is Haas overall and we gave it our all. I was pretty upset about Haas too. Only 4 international students got into Haas from my community college. I’m not an international student by the way.

I’m still waiting for USC Marshall, but I have my heart set on UCLA. Perhaps we can be roommates.

My major at UCLA is Business Econ. Four international students got in? You sure? o.O Is it this year only or does it includes the past years? I was under the impression that there would only be four to five international students OVERALL who got accepted. Man, I feel like a loser now :/

That’s a little more comforting. It is discouraging enough to know that if the average across the UC’s is ~3% acceptance on appeal, I have to believe that UCB is even less, and Haas must be near impossible. Good to know that is not 0% though.

I appealed with a very compelling argument, in my mind - My poor performance (B’s) were in Stats and Calc I and II. However my grades were 88.9+ in both cases. My test performance was well above average 97+%. My stats teacher offered me an A, but I declined on the basis that I had not earned an A and she did not offer anyone else in my grade range an A - I had her write a letter stating this as a fact. I took 15 units, including Stats and Calc over the summer, at the same time I was working as an intern for the County Economic Development Board, and dealing with renovating family properties for rental as my aunt, sister and father were all dealing with foreclosures. I was also managing my father’s flooring job at a luxury hotel. Needless to say, my failure came solely with my homework, which in the classes amounted to 20% and 15% of the total grade. The manner in which I explained the situation was much more eloquent. So, hopefully it works out. I explained that I felt more compelled to help my family out, and others struggling, with tutoring, since I understood the material quite well.
