UC Berkeley Art course requirement

We are planning to apply to UC Berkley as out of state applicant. We recently realized that it requires 1 year of art course which we don’t have place in the current year school schedule.
Are there any suggestions to meet this requirement with online classes?
Thank you in advance.

AP or IB examination
Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP History of Art, Art and Design or Music Theory Exam;

score of 5, 6 or 7 on any one IB HL exam in Dance, Film, Music, Theatre Arts or Visual Arts

College courses

Grade of C or better in any transferable course of 3 semester (4 quarter) units that clearly falls within one of five visual/performing arts disciplines: dance, music, theater, visual arts or interdisciplinary arts

Check out UC Scout as an on-line option or a local CC on-line course.

Thank you for the quick reply.
Are high schoolers allowed to take AP History of Art or Art and Design or Music Theory Exam with out actually taking the class in high school just by self studying the material ?

Yes. But your kid is far better off taking a community college or online course to meet the requirements.

The logistics of trying to register for an AP exam without the class are pretty tedious. Plus the deadline was today. And Studio Art and Music Theory are difficult to prepare on your own.

Do you know the best source to find out if an Intro To Theatre course or Art History course at local community college would fulfill the F requirement?

If it is at a California community college, you can check here: University of California A-G Course List

Got it! Thanks!

Self-studying the VPA requirement is really not recommended and is very difficult to do, especially at the last minute. Courses require a lot of feedback from the teacher and a lot of classroom visuals / discussion/ written prompts which lead to stronger grades and scores. In other words, they want this requirement met in a classroom setting.

All three of my children took AP Art History, and all three of them shared “combined” flash cards, within their study groups, to practice daily. Each student, in each group was assigned a specific genre or media and made sets of flash cards which they shared daily with their groups. Their teacher gave them rhymes and clues to use on the cards to help remember and recall the information. It is a LOT of information and started on day one. There were lots of hands on, tactile activities. The field trip, to the Getty museum, in Los Angeles occurred every year. When my children went to the Getty, they reported seeing other groups of high school students attending for the same experience. It’s not something that you just self-study, it’s the experience that the UC’s want the student to culturally achieve.

My middle daughter, and her high school friends who took the course with her, have traveled all over Europe and visited the museums. They like seeing the work from the artists they learned about in their class.

Don’t forget that as an Out Of State (OOS) applicant to Berkeley, you won’t qualify for instate funding, so you pay full fees of $67k per year.
Scholarships, are limited, competitive and won’t make a dent in the tuition for nonresidents.
