UC Berkeley Chances Fall 2011

I was just wondering about my chances for UC Berkeley as a "Linguistics"major...
My GPA is a 4.0, with plenty of A+'s. I'm a CCC transfer and I will have the IGETC completed by the end of Spring 2011. I have mediocre EC's, including tutoring, Dean's list... I started college a quarter late (I'll only have 5 quarters of CCC when I transfer) due to illness. I'm able to achieve the unit requirement because of AP credits and a greater than average course load. I'll have like 100-105 quarter units after Spring though.
What do you guys think my chances are?

wow, no one responded? bad bad people :)

I think you’re in!
Linguistics is not an impacted major as far as I know, and you with your 4.0 will be just fine!

I also am transferring to Berkeley for fall 11, but to Legal Studies major. Kind of same stats as yours: 4.0, Have dean’s and president’s list honors, honor program certified, I worked full time all the time I was in CCC. blah blah blah…
Everyone I talked to (incl. admissions counselors at Cal and a dean) said I was def in.

So are you :)

Good luck!!!

(I used to be a linguistics major (well, more accurately, translation major) when I went to school in Ukraine. But over there, there’s really nothing to do with this major, so I pretty much took off and moved to the US to major in what I REALLY want to do - Law.

Applying to Economics major from CCC

GPA: 3.82

Igetc: Done
TAP: Done for UCLA
Prereqs: Done

ECs: Member of PTK, Accounting society, Business leaders society, and president of Stock club.
-intern at financial firm
-small business manager

Essay: pretty damn good.

Hey thanks for answering! Yeah, I think you both have really good chances! I’m just worried about my EC’s… And I heard Berkeley admits by division. Linguistics is in the Social Science division, which is the most popular aside from Haas and made Engineering. I hope they do look at the specific major though. If not, I’m in the same boat as all other Social Science majors = lower chance of admission.

Applying to Media Studies from CCC
GPA: 3.8 – might be going down this semester though if I don’t get all A’s :frowning:
Degrees: AA in French and Social Sciences
Igetc: Done
Prereqs: Done
ECs: Executive Officer of Marketing in Student Gov’t, Editor-in-chief of school newspaper, Intern for gubernatorial candidate, intern at city newspaper, Student ambassador/orientation leader (paid)
Essays: They were decent. My first essay was around 600 words, talked about my involvement in media-related activities/pursuing my dream of becoming a journalist; the second was about running my first marathon and how it taught me about pushing beyond my limits, perseverance, dedication.

madddielove, if you keep your GPA, I think you’re in! I heard grade trends count, so really try to ace your fall finals!
