Ive just been admitted to engineering physics as an undergrad 1st year but I wanna do EECS instead. They require me to wait 2 semesters to switch. Will I be behind? What do I do? A friend said most of the courses are general ed so they might overlap? Help!

I don’t think you’ll be behind. Try to pick classes that apply to both majors… either way, you’ll need lots of math and physics. Throw in CS61A somewhere and I don’t think you’ll be behind. For CoE, I wouldn’t recommend trying to do all your humanities early, they can help pad your schedule later so you don’t get stuck taking 3 upper div CS classes together or something. But there are lots of classes you’ll need, for either major. Open up the list of requirements, or suggested freshman courseload for each major, and see if you can align your schedule for both. And uh, keep in mind you’ll need a pretty good GPA to swap.

L&S also has a CS degree (the BA) which is pretty similar if your focus is software. There are some differences (different H/SS requirements, fewer technical classes, L&S isn’t ABET but who cares) but for the most part they’re considered the same… it’s a CS degree from Berkeley. Now, that major is impacted right now as well, you need a 3.0+ in 61ABC and 70, but it’s another option if CoE gives you trouble. :P

But you should probably take a CS class or two before you decide if it’s what you really want to do… it’d suck to spend so much time getting into EECS, only to find out you hate it! I’d say 61A and 61B are pretty good indicators, but someone else might have a better suggestion on that.

Thank you so much.

I’ve looked at and compared the curriculum overview for both majors. It seems to me that there’s only a difference of 2-3 classes for freshman year.

Physics Engineering requires Chemistry. Can I push that to sophomore year and never take it because I will have switched when I become a sophomore?
