UC Berkeley - Class of 2022 Applicants Thread

@StevenToCollege I don’t know anything about this at all. I only know my dd got an email yesterday saying “Congratulations, xxx, on your admissions to UC Berkeley! If you decide to come to UC Berkeley, you will have multiple First Year Pathways to choose from, including the Fall Program for Freshman (FPF). FPF is a small, collaborative learning community for first-year students in the College of Letters and Science. Please join us on Friday February 23 …”. So, is this an important event to participate?

My D got Regents two years ago (now a Cal sophomore) and really loves Cal, and all of the Regents benefits – priority enrollment, guaranteed housing, dedicated faculty advisor, and even an “honorarium” since she didn’t qualify for other tuition waivers based on our family income. The one thing she made sure to do at the point you are all in now, however, was prepare for the Regents interview. THE INTERVIEW IS VERY IMPORTANT. She did some additional research of the college and major for which she was admitted, and also visited the campus before her interview and stayed with a regent scholar in her dorm as part of the ROHP. This way, she felt more prepared for her interview since she had questions ready and could actually say she visited the campus and loved Berkeley. She also tried to dress nicely (not super formal or expensive at all but not jeans and t-shirt like some of the other kids she saw). Of course not everyone can afford to visit, but absolutely, positively you should attend the interview and try to prepare. She actually knew some students who either blew off their interview or said they had nothing to say in their interview – and these kids ended up not getting Regents. Sign up now!! Good spots go fast. Good luck everyone

Sorry if this has already been asked, but I was accepted to UC Berkeley a few days ago without regents or any merit scholarship. So do we know why some were accepted early / what it means???

It is an honor to be accepted early. It means you are a top candidate in Berkeley’s eyes and they want you to have more time to consider and get excited about Cal.

does anyone have instagram or something? I’d like to meet people who have also been accepted to Cal.

@ivyforest I am OOS and got accepted too. From what I understand there are 3 ‘pathways’ . Pl. look at links at the bottom of your acceptance letter (global, traditional and FPF are the three). I am not going but FPF gives you an option to join in Spring - at least that is my understanding. I do not think its anything special. It is not the Regents scholarship interview, which in my opinion is very special!

@go_dawgs Thanks for your reply. I called UCB today, and I was told the Cal Day on April 21 is better for OOS to attend.

Hi, my son received an invitation to the Regents Scholarship. Could anyone advise if any international applicants were ever awarded this scholarship? It seems that this scholarship is mainly awarded to in-state and to a small number of OOS. We are not sure if we should travel half way around the world to attend the interview (if the odds of being awarded is slim). Thanks.

My son is a Regents scholar at Berkeley (EECS ‘21, also got Regents for UCLA CSE). We live in SolCal so he did the interview locally. He said the interviewer didn’t ask technical questions, he’s not there to test you. He did have my son’s application and asked about his classes and extracurricular activities, and some personal questions, like what’s your favorite book.
Congrats to those who got accepted early and good luck everyone to those who are still waiting! Both my sons are at Berkeley and they love the school, the community, and the people.

@84stag Thank you very much! I am quite excited. I appreciate you trying to clarify but I’ve been born and raised in CA so I’m pretty familiar with the UC system and know that the UCs do not offer early action/decision. I apologize if it was not clear, but I was discussing early action at Santa Clara University, as well as comparing Haas to business schools at other top universities. I was responding to earlier messages asking where else Regents Candidates were accepted to and where they applied, and someone asked specifically about the Santa Clara acceptance/scholarship. I again apologize for this misunderstanding.

@CopperlineX2 Thank you for explaining my post about SCU!

@collegefind1234 I totally agree with you! Not being guaranteed Haas is very scary but the financial side of it is very nice. Are you going to do ROHP? I am hoping to gain insight into alternative paths to Haas and job/internships those students get. And yes, scholarships for those other schools is out of the question for me as well haha. I am also from SoCal! I am on the border of LA county and OC so I dumbly waited to see if any business interviews opened up in Arcadia as it is closer to me by 45 minutes, but now all of the San Diego business ones are gone. I booked a social science interview last night as that should include economics and maybe I could get an idea about Econ vs Haas!

@yuiichiiros how did you do both MIT EA and Carnegie Mellon ED? i thought it was illegal to apply to EA if Carnegie was binding ED

I got admission in EECS major at Berkeley without Regents invitation, Is there a significant disadvantage of not being Regents scholar? Does one face hard time getting any classes or dorm accommodation?

@shapeofyou You can’t apply to two school ED, but you can apply to one school ED and as many schools as you want ED. The only caveat is that is you get into you’re ED school you have pull all all your applications Conversely, if you got into a first choice EA school before you got you ED result, you could pull your ED app.

How prestigious does Cal Regents look on grad school apps and beyond?

@shapeofyou You can only do only one ED, but you can do as many nonrestrictive EA schools as you want even if you do. However, if you do ED somewhere, you cannot apply anywhere that does SCEA. So it’s fine to ED to CMU and EA to MIT, but you can’t ED to CMU and SCEA to, say, Stanford.

Is Berkeley sending out acceptances on a rolling basis or all decisions come out in March?

They typically send the acceptances at the end of March on a Friday - such as 3/23 or even 3/30 But will be all at once in one day for that. The early acceptances already went last week and should be done except for maybe people who post late.

Does Berkeley send out Regents with admissions, without interview invites or do all Regents recipients have to interview?

UCB regents invites interview, but know they have been accepted. UCLA invites to interview, but not guaranteed admission.

@CopperlineX2 Why would UCLA like you enough to be a potential regents scholar, but not enough for basic admission?

(also…YELLO, just a lurker to this thread whose decided to join the conversation~)
