UC Berkeley - Class of 2022 Applicants Thread

I still haven’t gotten the global edge email (applied to CS in L&S, I’m a domestic applicant but out of state). But I’m also not subscribed to their emails so the only emails that I’ve gotten from them are about receiving my application.

@coolguy985 Yeah, I didn’t receive one then. I also checked my portal and didn’t say anything in regards to the LOR. So I feel that it’s random.

@JuckFames , I have no insider info, but if I have to guess, yes, it should increase your chance of being accepted. It’s essentially the same as checking “consider me for spring admission” or “consider me for summer school” for some other colleges.

@CompSci1999 my son had a 3.83 unweighted and a 4.56 weighted. Not sure of his capped UC GPA. 32 composite ACT. ECs included engineering academy, graphics team leader, varsity track and XC. Internships in CS and engineering fields for two summers. I think his essays and his ECs, which demonstrated his passions, were the tipping point for his acceptance. He also submitted the Global Edge application (although when the time came he didn’t choose the Global Edge program). My friend’s daughter had a better GPA ( I think a 4.0 unweighted) and a 32 composite ACT. She had leadership positions in HS in her ECs and was in the engineering academy. I Didn’t read her essays so can’t comment on those. My thought is admissions first looks at your GPA and ACT/SAT scores to see if you meet a certain level. They then look at your ECs and essays. They want passionate, unique and interesting people at their school. Hope this helps. Good luck!

@tasmom Thank you very much. I have similar stats and as for the ECs, I don’t have any sports. I think my only concern is lack of sports, which I hope my plethora of ECs help balance out.

@CompSci1999 Sports don’t matter one bit unless you’re being recruited. I just did it for fun

anyone got letter of recommendation request?

@PawanGhimire I actually haven’t yet and I’m really worried seeing as everyone I know who applied to Berkeley received a LOR request.

Well, my recommendations are fire…hopefully it will work

Haven’t received a LOR request yet. I’m really worried

LOR are not requested from everyone, correct?

Did everyone get a “Happy New Year” email from Berkeley?

@YoungOne4 yes

@PawanGhimire when did you receive the LOR request?

@Nealthakker why would you be worried? Not getting LOR doesn’t mean you are going to be rejected.

@coolguy95 What exactly does getting a LOR request mean, then?

Regarding LOR requests, I posted this earlier in this thread.

This year, each UC is limited to sending requests for letters of recommendation to 15% of the applicant pool. See the attached link:

https://■■■■■■■■■■■■/home/uc-recommendation-letters/

I always thought LOR were only for impacted majors. But maybe that’s just gossip since I don’t see that anywhere

LORs are not just for impacted majors. And, there are new Augmented Review rules at UCs this year, which are explained in the linked article. Hope this helps.

@coolguy985 I got LOR request within two days of submission

There’s leaked information on how Berkeley does its admissions process and how LORs work, what does it mean to an applicant who receives it…

The gist of it: If you applied to COE, then an LOR request means your chances are bleak.
If you applied to L&S, an LOR request isn’t a setback.
