UC Berkeley College of Chemistry vs Yale for future PhD in Chemical Biology

I would definitely rather go to COC for Chemical Biology, but my only concern is that if I go to Berkeley undergraduate I will have to attend another top school in Chemistry for graduate programs, and because Berkeley does not inbreed that would leave Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, or UCSF for grad school. If i were to go to Yale I would at least have Berkeley for another option for Grad school? any advice? what about the usual matriculation from each school in the field?

Thanks

You could research matriculation at these schools by looking up the student directory for each grad program. Student directories often give the undergrad school. Also, google the national science foundation graduate research fellowship program website. Once there, you can search by year the list of students who have won an award or got honorable mention. You can manipulate the list by looking at baccalaureate institution, grad school, and by field. For you, do it by field, and then you’ll see where these ppl went to undergrad and then grad school. Just beware that if undergrad and grad schools are listed as identical, it probably means they won the award as undergrads before knowing where they were going to grad school.

You pretty much told us your answer. Go to UC Berkeley’s College of Chemistry. In the world rankings UC Berkeley is is always top 5 and surpasses Yale in terms of research and prestige in that area. UC Berkeley grads tend to love to go to MIT, Stanford, etc for graduate school and you’ll have no problem getting into any top grad school from one of the best schools in the world. The only downfall is that you’ll have to work a bit harder, which shouldn’t be hard for a student of your caliber.
