My first post on this website. Recent highschool graduate, planning to attend a community college for two years, and then apply to UCB as a computer science major. Just looking for general advice on what to do so i can improve my chances of admission.

I took honors and AP's through out highschool, but never really applied myself and ended with a gpa of 3.5. Only decent A.P score was Calculus which was a 4. Got a 1950ish in my SAT. Should i retake these exams and try to do better? Planning on learning Java and C++ on the side while attending CC.

concentrate on math, the CS classes will be easy in comparison!

Take a look at Assist.org, that’ll give you a pretty good idea of what you need to be taking. Berkeley has two CS programs btw, so take a look at both and decide if you want a BA in Comp Sci (letters and science) or a BS in EECS (engineering school), since they have completely different requirements.

I wouldn’t worry too much about retaking the SAT and such if you’re going to a two year school, that information isn’t really looked at for transfers. For AP exams (can you take those twice?) you can probably find what scores you need to receive credit on berkeley’s website (or wherever else you’re applying).

Also, Java and C++ are incredibly similar, as they are both object oriented. After you learn one it’s pretty easy to pick up the other. And you should probably be taking courses on one of them at your CC, not “on the side”. :P
