Did anyone get accepted to or know of anyone who got into cal as a Computer Science (L&S) major. If so, I would appreciate it if you could provide GPA and extra curriculars or any other perks.

I got two C's in the GE college courses I took in high school and can earn a maximum GPA of 3.8 now (assuming I get straight As all throughout my 2 years at CC) so I am a little worried. Some general advice would be helpful. thanks.

Oh lastly, how important are ECs in my GPA situation? Keep in mind the major im applying with. thanks again.

any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I’d love to ask this same question too. But as far as I’m concerned, 3.8 is FINE, as long as you complete IGETC and most of the major requirements (not including the CS61 series I guess). I know a guy from my CC got in with 3.77, so don’t worried.

ECs are not so important, but it can help borderline students, like in your (and mine) case. I guess you should do some CS tutoring, look for an internship in the summer, join the computer club at school, etc. Don’t waste $75 to join AGS or Phi Kappa (watever name it is ==’ ) bc they do not give a damn about these clubs, as what I heard from most people. Few but useful ECs in which you hold leadership positions or similar are MUCH better than being an average Joe on EVERY SINGLE club at school

That’s all I can answer. I am applying to Cal L&S CS this November as well. My GPA is the same as yours (3.78), so good luck to both of us :D.

Oh and btw, you should look for CS61 Series’ equivalence at other schools nearby bc it will give you a HUGE advantage to start at Cal, since w/o the breadth requirement, next year’s competition is going to be rigorous. Me? I’m not going to do that since I still have a lot of pre-reqs to take…

Here are the stats for UCLA admitted transfers. 3.8 and above is very good. Any advice guys? I’m taking all the courses I can take at my community college, but I’m missing a few that I can’t take. I hear that you don’t need all the pre-reqs done, but there is a general amount you need. Is that just the Calculus series? And what else?

You need to complete EVERYTHING (Calculus, LA&DE, Physics, Gen Chem, two English courses), along with ONE course in C++ to transfer to UCLA. Sometimes, they may allow you to miss one pre-req if you have a good GPA and a reasonable explanation, but that’s rare so don’t bet on it…

@OP: I guess I’m wrong in the “competitiveness” of next year, seems like only Haas getting more competitive, not L&S bc completion of IGETC will normally satisfy all the breadth requirements. Sorry for the misleading info :(

Try to take as many of the needed CS courses as possible, which may require taking them at multiple community colleges:

(Not sure why is says “no” for “IGETC recommended for this major”, since L&S at Berkeley does accept IGETC for breadth requirements.)

You can also preview CS courses at Berkeley at the course home pages:

I know like 5 guys from Phi Theta Kappa who got into cal this year as cs or eecs majors. I would say ptk matters and so do clubs related to cs. Furthermore, they all had 3.8 - 4.0 GPAs.

@ucbalumnus Were they members? Or did they in leadership roles?

MoorPark College has articulated courses for COMPSCI 61B AND COMPSCI 61C.

[ASSIST Report](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

I live 15 miles away from there and am actually considering going there instead of Santa monica college (which is 20 miles away lol).

I don’t want to discourage you but going the Moorpark route may take you more than 2 years to complete stuff. Even if you take CS M20 there, you still need CS 47 at Cal, and that’s really time-consuming. That’s why I don’t take a CS course articulated with CS61B at De Anza bc I’d need another course anyway. Same goes for articulated courses with CS 61C at Moorpark.

Right but wouldn’t taking them give you an upper hand over the other applicants who are applying to UCB CS? I was planning on taking courses that weren’t official equivalents to CS 61B (C++ and Data Structures with C++) at santa monica college anyways.

LA Valley College’s CS 836 + CS 839 articulate to CS 61B (unlike other community colleges, it does not list CS 47B as being required after transfer).
[ASSIST Report](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST)

So what you can do is take the the CS 61B equivalent courses at LA Valley, and the CS 61C equivalent courses at Moorpark. Then you will just need CS 61A, CS 70, and EE 42 to clear the lower division prerequisites, leaving a full three semesters for upper division CS courses after transferring to Berkeley (of course, getting in may be the hard part).

I got accepted for CS in L&S for UC Berkeley. Cumulative GPA: 3.93. 1 year transfer. Many ECs. You may be able to dig up my more in-depth stats in the official berkeley chance thread I started.
