UC Berkeley dorms.

If you want to live in the dorms again for your second year, you have first choice where you want and you can choose what floor and room.

If that were true, I wouldn't have ended up being offered a triple in Unit 3.

If you request a special dorm, like an all girls' floor or substance free, will you usually get it?

from anecdotal evidence, all i can say is: it depends. i know that for continuing students, housing is done on a lottery basis. that is to say, it's random. the same is probably true for freshmen. i got my #1 choice as a freshmen, whereas my bf got none of his 5 choices. he complained, though, and was upgraded. so even if you don't get something initially, you can always call housing later and ask them to switch you.

Okay.

If you want gigantic rooms and good food, choose Clark Kerr (whether that will be available is questionable).

Unit 3 is a lil older, but closest to everything southside.

Unit 1 and 2 look nice (recently remodeled), and are pretty much just your standard dorms, unless you get doubles and/or triples in minisuites, which have much more room, and in general are just much, much nicer (i'll be in Unit 1 minisuites next year).

Foothill has even larger rooms, but cost more. They are northside, close to a lot of the engineering/cs/chemistry classes (except intro CS, which is on the other, south, side of campus). The quads are GIGANTIC, with far more space than necessary to house 4 people. Can't say much about Bowles/Stern (no personal experience).

If you request single-sex, you will get it. Whether you get placed into Stern or an all-girls floor (for girls) is up to the housing office. If you request single-sex for guys, you'll get Bowles.

Calling and complaining is a perfectly valid way to get what you want =)

This doesn't work for freshman, but in later years you can pick your rooms.

Which dorms are the most social, best for meeting people, and great parties?

Parties tend to not happen in the dorms but are more so in the co-ops or with the Greeks.

unit 3 annex

Bowles is very social and it by far has the largest rooms.

yeah im also curious, clark kerr under renovations = means??

and whats the difference in cost, unit 123 vs foothill vs clark kerr??

Cost generalization
Foothill & CKC suites > CKC > Stern and Units doubles > Bowles > Stern and Units triples

Stern doubles in suite and non-Bowles quads not included above

Space
Bowles > Foothill and CKC > Stern > Units

I actually recommend getting a triple in the Units (especially Units 1 or 2). It is a little cramped, but you save ~$3000. IT IS WORTH IT. Just make friends with people in doubles on the floor and crash in their room. Seriously, no one is forcing you to spent all your time locked up in your triple.

Clark Kerr is too damn far. >.<

hmm, how much is the different in getting a double in the units versus a triple in the units?

the units (1 and 2) are the ones so far i'm planning, so I'd like to know how much i'd save by switching to triples instead of doubles.

how are the classes in general for science majors? large? interactive? loads of reading?

yes. large and loads of reading.

How about the college of chem specifically? On their website it says they cap the generals at 220...is this fully true??

all the dorms have wireless access right?

and is it equally strong in all areas of the buildings? or do i have to scout a room that'll have decent stability and strength.

@fiesta of fire -- the difference between doubles and triples for the units for the 08-09 year was a little more than $2000, so i'm expecting for next year it'll be closer to $3000. I only put doubles into my choices, but I ended up with a triple. Honestly, I'm really happy about my triple, because I love one of my roommates and hate the other. Its a little cramped but as someone said earlier you don't have to spend your time there if you don't want to. Also, there are a lot more triples now because of the renovation at Clark Kerr; they've been converting a lot of doubles into triples. The dorm rooms themselves have really bad wireless connection (at least in the units), but you do have ethernet connection that works much better. Certain rooms have good connection because they are above study lounges and what not.

@lala91 -- The prereqs for CoC are generally about that size. I know Chem 4A, which is intro to chem for CoC, is a bit larger like around 260, but not even close to the 500+ for Chem 1A.

^You really should not count on your dorm room having wifi.

You should bring an ethernet cable (or a router if you want your own wireless).

If you intend on bringing video game console(s), a router is pretty much a necessity.

Alright, I have an ethernet cable.

Are the sockets for that conveniently placed under the desks in the dorms? Because I'm planning on bringing a desktop for my gaming needs.

It looks like Units triples are the cheapest out of the 6 dorms, but which Unit , 1,2, or 3, is generally the best?? And which Unit triples is the cheapest??
