Hey guys, I'd like to start this thread to check out the competition for Cal. Let's provide our stats to see how we are doing and chance each other of course!

Major: Computer Science (L&S)
GPA: 4.0 (3.7-3.92 after Spring)
Major GPA: 4.0
EC's: Work at Apple, MESA tutor, Computer Science grader/tutor
PS: 7-8/10
IGETC: No, will do 7 course breadth

Major: English
GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
EC’s: Big Brothers Big Sisters, In2Books e-pal mentor, monthly beach clean up, Full time secretary for 3 years, Food Bank…
PS: I don’t really believe in rating this portion. I wrote it and it totaled 999 words. I put effort into it so hopefully it goes okay…
IGETC: One more class left to fulfill in Spring before transfer.
Prerequisites: All done by Spring. Will get AA in English in Spring.

xcaliberse: You definitely seem like a shoe in, without a doubt. Not only does your GPA display this but most importantly your choice of extra curriculars shows your passion in CS (also my boyfriend’s major, who is applying to Berkeley. Let’s hope we all get in! Haha.) Good luck!

Major: American Studies
GPA: 3.64 (3.59 after fall due to Stats)
Major GPA: 4.0
EC’s: Working student, writer on college newspaper, journalism internship, volunteer at 2 elderly homes, campus art gallery, Filipino Community Center (SF), Honors Program, PTK…
PS: Pretty even word count. Read over by peers, profs, counselors, friends.
IGETC: Yes, all I have left is Associate’s degree requirements for Spring. Definitely a more relaxed semester!

@IndieRockNRoll - I think you’re also definitely in for a few reasons. According to UCB’s comprehensive review factors, you are pretty much set. Your EC’s imply the type of person you are such as beach cleanup and stuff. Right, even though you don’t rate your PS, it is probably very well written because you are an English major.

What are your boyfriend’s stats? Is he going for EECS or CS?

@mytime09 - I would go for a 70% for you. Just an estimate. Your GPA is on par with your major. But more importantly your MAJOR GPA is a 4.0 which they look at mostly. Is stats really dropping your GPA by .05? You show financial responsibility because you work as a student and you also are a writer which is good for serving the school. Berkeley looks for a student like you. Well rounded. Good luck!

Just letting you guys know that UCB and UCLA hate (HATE) declining GPA’s especially Fall semester prior to enrollment… might be kind of obvious but still…

@xcaliberse yes, stats will drop it .05 points. I wavered withdrawing but decided to sally forth and shoot for the best grade I can get. If I get a B, my GPA will go up to 3.68.

As for your chances, I think they’re quite good! Cumulative + major GPA is solid and EC’s correlate to your major. Best of luck to you too :)

@IndieRockNRoll Aww, good luck to you AND your BF!!!

Your stats are solid as well, strong academic record, compelling EC’s. Pretty strong chance of admission.

Major: M.E. (COE)
GPA: 3.81
Major GPA: 4.0
EC’s: nothing special. done church works. spent most time studying.
PS: 6-7/10. not a strong writer.
IGETC: No

i tried to take as many major courses as possible. so far i took 4 comp sci(c# and c++) just because i like the subject, 4 math, 2 gen chem, and 2 physics. im planning to take the last physics sequence, and one engineering(statics) next semester with some GE.
my gpa kinda low because of the c i got in a 4 unit comp sci class in which anyone gets A if he knows how to use excel and access. i missed the final of the class because i overslept. of course i didnt say i overslept and missed final in my app. rofl.

@passwordis123, what were the stats of your friend? Umm, I say you’re about 60% for mech engineering only because it’s engineering + mech engineering is one of the most competitive majors in that school. Your major gpa which is a 4.0 is amazing. Good luck!
Btw, I’m a one year transfer so I don’t know how much of a disadvantage I will be if any.

she got B in second physics and A’s in all the other courses. not sure about her EC or PS, but from what i know prob not as good as your. for sure.

Major: Economics
GPA: 4.0
Berkeley TAP: Yes
EC’s: Econ tutor, math tutor and a few other “small” things
Essay: I know it was very good. Writing is one of my strengths
IGETC: One course to go, will finish this spring
This semester I will maintain 4.0 with only one prereq to finish in the spring

@xcal, indie: looks good. Id say ur both in.

@mytime: dont really know enough about the program. If its in the Social Sciences Id say ur chances are kind of low. If not then u have a good shot.

@Passwrd: Thats tough. The C hurts. I say 50-50. Major GPA helps alot tho

Edit: xcal: just noticed you are a one-year transfer. I dont know enough about how they evaluate u guys but if you can have a nice chunk of units completed before spring then ur lookin good. idk if you are using AP credit or what but it may not look good if you have 25 units left to complete in the spring

Major: Comparative Literature
GPA: 4.0
EC’s: Tutoring writing, volunteering at local library, Honors program.
PS: Fairly strong.
IGETC: Taking last IGETC class this spring.

@Billionaire it’s in Interdisciplinary studies, originally I was going to apply to social sciences under Sociology but acceptance in that dept. of L&S is lower than interdisciplinary, so I went w/American Studies.

Major: Business admin.
GPA: 3.9
TAP: Yeah
Essays: Perfect
ECs: Probably amongst the best.
Bad stuff: 2 incomplete prereqs, 3 Ws. :(

What are my chances? Basically I have suffered with withdrawing from a lot of classes due to my stressful schedules. I heard UCs don’t care about Ws though. I make up for that with a decent GPA, good ECs and great essays. Plus I’m in Cal TAP.

Guy, I’m wondering, with those 3.8 - 4 GPAs, where are you guys transferring in from? Community Colleges?

I applied for a transfer from the University of Michigan. I’ve a GPA of 4 right now, but I predict that after this term, It’ll prob slide to, at worse, a 3.85. Will that hurt me?

@Investment - Not having those prereq’s finished may or may not disqualify you from being considered for admission. You might want to check with an admissions officer. Haas is VERY competitive. You should have your major prereqs completed. I don’t think the W’s matter too much if it’s not W’s in the same class. Cal TAP might give you an advantage though! 90% of Cal TAP students get admitted! Good luck!

@boysdontcry - Yes, a higher GPA is always better than a lower one. Also because you are an out-of-state transfer, chances are pretty slim. Community college students have priority for admission.
