UC Berkeley Fall 2011 Chance thread

scrump- are you taking the second semester and the calc based physics right now?

I’m not an admissions officer, but I do know that Biology is one of the most popular majors in Berkeley, making up of about 12% of the students. That’s what Collegeboard.com says. Don’t know how accurate that info is though. But given that and based on the information you provided me, you are missing 2 prerequisites which really does not look good. Your GPA is fantastic though and your extracurriculars are excellent and relevant, so it’s really hard to say at this point.

BUT: if you’re taking those 2 prereqs this semester, then you’re good! You have the same GPA as me. I have a 3.93 cumulative and a 4.0 major GPA.

Chance me too

for old times sake

Haas applicant
Major:Business
GPA:3.76
Prereqs:all done except for Cal 1 and English 102
Courseload:82 units in 2 years (14 in 5 week session, 21 last Fall semester. Haven’t taken a semester or session off since the summer of my high school graduation.)
Major GPA:4.0
ECs: Independent Financial Products Trader (index/commodities futures, equity and etf options, binary options)
Intern at Financial Advisory firm and was involved with starting a oil and gas hedge fund.
PS:I showed them to one of the student body government officials at Haas undergrad and he said that they were what Haas was looking for but I’m still meh on them.

Thanks

No, unfortunately I cannot take 2nd semester ochem because of the budget cuts. And I was planning on taking the 1 year of physics once i transfer. The budget cuts really screwed me up :frowning:
I would love to take it over the summer, but my cc doesn’t offer it over the summer. Smc and all the other colleges who do offer it would probably be too full considering their students get priority registration over me. Plus I’m an international student, which makes applying to different ccc ever more difficult!

@ deanzatransfer: You’re in lol. I would be appalled and would recommend you appeal if you’re rejected. Btw, as for appeals, do it if you guys feel you have a legit case.

I appealed UCLA and it worked, so it’s always worth a shot!

what about me!

emilsinclair9, I sure hope so! I also know someone who appealed UCLA’s decision and then got admitted (ended up not going there though).
@scrump: I think you have a good shot even though your prereqs are not complete. I don’t believe there are many science majors with GPAs as high as yours.
@talebi: For you prereqs, with “all done except for Cal 1 and English 102” do you mean you are taking those courses now? If not… I’ve read numerous times that Haas applicants need to have all of the requirements completed prior to transfer. Apparently the only reason why the acceptance rate is so low at Haas is that many applicants don’t fulfill the requirements which results in rejection.

oh yeah of course I’m taking them right now.

@talebi: in that case, I think it could go either way for you. Haas is hard to get into even if you complete all the requirements. Your GPA is lower than that of lots of other Haas applicants (usually 3.8+) BUT your ECs and your PS could get you in.

i am really banking on my course load to negate my lower GPA and give me a little edge. Most Haas applicants i know are 3-4 year applicants. I only knew one 2 year applicant from fall of 09 who got in and he basically did what I did as regards to course load.

If i took the same amount of units in 3 years, i would definitely have a higher GPA but i pointed out in my essay why I didn’t want to stay in LA/community college any longer then I already am.

scrump, I think you can do your prereqs during summer!

@ deanzatransfer: It’s interesting that both your friend and I appealed and then opted not to attend. :p

@ talebi: You’re probably in, but still pretty borderline. Your GPA is a bit low, but judging by your EC’s, and especially considering that you explained the heavy courseload in CCC and how quickly you finished them, I’m leaning to say that you’re in.

Btw I do research in Haas; maybe I’ll see ya there.

Also, I actually know of a 1-year transfer to Haas. He posted here on College Conf. last year.

Hopefully I see you there, crossing my fingers til 29th.

Thanks for looking at my stats

I guess I might as well get a chance too :P

Haas
19 years old
3.92 gpa
4.0 major gpa (also finished calc 2 with an A)
Prereqs done since last fall
79 units done by this semester
ECs: Worked directly under an actuary at a Fortune 200 holding company for 1.5 years, Summer Internship at U.S. Bank corporate, 400+ hours volunteering at local homeless shelter
PS: I think they were good but who knows. I didn’t really show it to anyone.

Did you apply for the Fall 2011 semester or are you applying for Fall 2012?

Ugh. 22 days.

Fall 2011 of course

You’re a champ @shinra. You started taking classes while you were in high school?

Nope, but I took classes every summer and winter session since I graduated. Thanks for the reply!

How could You do internships and 400 community service hours while do school full time.

Everytime I see stats like that I pray that the admission officers call the places of work and verify that you did those actual things.
