Advice for future applicants? Strengths and weaknesses in your application? Lingering thoughts about the admissions process?

Transferring into engineering is one of the most competitive things. I didn’t even get into BioE at UCSD, which is my dream school. Make sure to get involved in some sort of extracurricular research, and be sure you complete ALL of the premajor requirements for your intended engineering major before you transfer. Getting the highest GPA you can is also a plus. Write moving personal statements about why you are passionate in the field you want to study, and hope for the best. I wasn’t expecting anything from Cal, and was going to go to UCSD for Nanoengineering. This offer is a difficult one to make, and I’m still trying to decide.

Accepted!

Advice for future applicants? Strengths and weaknesses in your application? Lingering thoughts about the admissions process?

Definitely get involved on campus - don’t just crowd your resume with random leadership positions, have things you are interested in. Show that you moved up in these positions (start as a member, move to a leadership position). Most importantly, work on the essays extensively, that is what gets you into Haas. Make sure they are not typical/generic essays. For my first two essays I just wrote 2 simple stories and what I learned from these situations, and conveyed my sense of humor.

Alright, here are my answers to part two. I applied to Haas, so keep in mind that my thoughts are on applying for that program.

Advice for future applicants?
Try to finish all major prep and breadth by the Spring semester before transfer and all of the math courses by the Fall semester before transfer, if you can. That’s something I wish I knew when I started. I was told by three different Haas admissions counselors that they really want to see both of your Calc grades. I also think I would have been a little less worried if I knew they had all of that info up front. At the same time, I am still taking 16A, so it’s not like not finishing will automatically disqualify you either.

Get whatever help you can as soon as you can because they really do put a fair amount of resources into helping students navigate the process. If you can get into TAP, Experience Berkeley, or the Starting Point Mentorship program, definitely do it. My TAP counselor really helped me with my essays which were a hot mess when I started. Once you join one of these programs they will send you email updates about upcoming events. They have workshops where actual admissions counselors will read your essays and provide feedback. One of the Assistant Director of Admissions at Haas read my PS at one of these and gave phenomenal feedback. The Haas admissions webinars were also really helpful. Finally, google “Ms. Sun,” she is a consultant who has a blog which has a ton of resources as well.

Strengths and weaknesses in your application?
My strengths were: probably my grades and personal statements. I started worked on my essays in August and was really proud of them at the end. I have a lot of work experience, so my Haas resume was pretty full too.
My weaknesses were: I may not finish the breadth unless I take the final two classes over the summer and I did not have the math series done when I applied. I did not have a lot of volunteering because I was working full time. I also got a B in Pre-Calculus and I was concerned that it would be a knock against me, even though it’s not part of the major prep.

Lingering thoughts about the admissions process?
Man, that was intense! I have not put that much effort into anything in a long time. There are a ton of resources I did not know about until late in the process but, thankfully, it was enough. I’m still a bit stunned, really.

Congrats to everyone who got in! Thank you all for making this past year a lot more bearable.

@Hiroaki0422 Thank you for your advice! They help a lot!

Advice
Try to have the highest GPA you can, 3.9+. Computer Science at UC Berkeley is very very competitive!
Write a great personal statement, plan it months in advance with proofreads by different people.
Have some EC’s. I wish I had gotten internships, had leadership positions, and had been a member of at least 2 clubs at school.

Advice for future applicants? Strengths and weaknesses in your application? Lingering thoughts about the admissions process?

I’ll start with strengths/weaknesses in my app, and then go to provide advice.

Strengths: I took a major prerequisite at Cal (Philosophy 12A) and got an A. I also commuted (and am still commuting) 3x per week for two semesters to get the other 2 prerequisites completed. For reference, there are very few schools that offer prerequisites that articulate with Berkeley’s lower-division requirements for the major. CCSF has all three - so for any Philosophy hopefuls in the Bay Area, I highly recommend that.

GPA, ECs, essays, etc. were all perfect, or at least very good. I gave them absolutely no reason to deny me.

Weaknesses: Honestly, none really. I could have done more ECs, sure, but it really wasn’t necessary for me.

Advice for future applicants: Probably the most important piece of advice I have: Develop a strong work ethic while in community college - it will be a huge asset after you transfer, and on through your life.

Don’t take too many classes, especially your first semester. Some people overload on classes because they’re interested in them, and their GPA tanks.

Your GPA is extremely important. Also, if you plan to go to graduate/professional school, YOUR GRADES IN COMMUNITY COLLEGE COUNT. So try to do well while you can. My 4.0 over two years in CC provides me with an excellent GPA cushion for law school - i.e. if I were to keep a 3.5 average at Cal, I would have approximately a 3.75, which puts me in the running for numerous T14 law schools. Get good grades while it’s still easy - at Cal, As are definitely not handed out so easily. Still, challenge yourself in CC - if your CC has honors courses, consider taking them. It will likely make the transition easier, and you will probably get more out of your classes. Community colleges can offer a strong education - it’s up to you to take advantage of it.

Don’t load up on ECs - they take up a lot of your time. If you want to get involved, pick something you’re really interested in/passionate about, and try to make some impact with that. You don’t need to be a member of 10 different clubs to be admitted into UC Berkeley.

Commuting is terrible, don’t do it unless you’re blindly dedicated.

Don’t trust your CC’s counselors.

Take the minimum required Math/English courses ASAP.

Research the process yourself. Read through old threads on college confidential, read through some of the materials on the UC transfer admissions website, etc. - it’ll give you some familiarity with the whole transfer process. After well over a year of this sort of research, I feel like an expert on UC transfer admissions (at least regarding all information pertinent to me).

I dunno, I’m exhausted, but I can’t wait to start classes in the Fall. Good luck to all future applicants - if you have any questions, or would like any advice, then feel free to message me. I’m happy to help.

Go Bears!

@goldencub
Congrats!

Advice for future applicants? Strengths and weaknesses in your application? Lingering thoughts about the admissions process?

My essays were really strong. I used them to tell a compelling story and I think it’s what sold me. I had a lot of B’s, even in major requirements, like macroeconomics and calc 1, and even three C-'s, but they were 10 years ago. For all of you non-traditional students (veterans, re-entry, etc), find a way to use this to your advantage and tell a compelling story.

Stay focused. Push yourself.

Now that I’ve had time to celebrate and calm down, I can post lol.

Advice for future applicants? Strengths and weaknesses in your application? Lingering thoughts about the admissions process?

Strengths: EC’S, Strong Personal Statements
Weaknesses: GPA

Advice: If you don’t have the best GPA, don’t be discouraged. Get the best GPA you can and make up for it with the other components of your application. As you all know, Berkeley is very selective about the kind of student they want. Stand out and be yourself. I know the application process is intimidating, but just stay true to yourself and YOUR passions. Good luck future applicants!

Can anyone chance me for UCB and UCLA?

Sorry, I know this is the right thread, but I need info !
I currently go to Cal CC and am an international student.
(one of the biggest CC in Cal in case it matters for admission, like reputation thing)
I will apply this fall 2016.

Major: EECS for UCB / CS&E for UCLA
GPA: 3.98
Major GPA: 4.00 / 1 W on math (Diff. equation)
Completion of Major Prerequisites? (Y/N): Y
Completion of IGETC or other GE requirements?: N (no need tho)

ECs: 1 non-major related club vice president, 1 major club (doing a small project), tutoring (math and computer), making apps for iphone/ipad.

Nothing much on ECs. There is nothing more to do as an international student.
I am so nervous currently.

If you need more info. plz reply
Thank you in advance.

My friend, please post in the UC Berkeley transfer thread. This thread is solely intended to be a resource for future applicants. It was created to filter out anything that wasn’t an admissions decision. Even me telling you this is further clogging up the thread. Please post in the other thread, thank you.

@blsUCtransfer Dude, I also aim to UCB EECS and wanna get some infro from you !
