@neilsola Our age could actually be a strength for us rather than a weakness. Think about it, not only will we have completed all these difficult pre-requisite courses within two years and took classes at college straight out of high school, plus depending on the extra-curricular activities you do such as managing a business or interning at a company, plus explaining any situations that were obstacles to your academic success and how you’ve overcome them. This is all done by us since we were 17! I think it would show just how mature we are and our potential to do great things when we’ve had this mindset at a fairly young age. These traits are expected in older people, but might not for younger people, assuming we “haven’t been exposed to the real world and its issues” and all of that stuff.
@GoodAfternoonSir I guess you’re right. However in my case I don’t have a business to manage or an internship. Everywhere I looked required experience, and also my circumstances at home made it so I don’t really have time for an internship. My extracurriculars are in clubs and also working as a tutor at my community college. I hope I can find something else this fall to add to my application. May I ask what your business is?
@neilsola Currently I’m co-operating a business with my mom (Partnership). I have contacts that make clothes and ship them overseas using DHL over here in California. I then sell the clothes either in the comfort of my home or through exhibitions twice a month. I make a comfortable living, given how cheap and affordable it is to make clothes over there with rupees (Pakistan’s currency system is devalued compared to America’s Dollars, which is the prime currency regulated through all nations and is backed up by gold). I also was an entrepreneur during high school, establishing a candy shop and selling products to primarily a younger demographic. I made a decent living with my family during the time but closed the shop ever since my uncle, who is a factory owner, made a deal with my family to produce clothe and do the clothing business. In exchange, he’d get a small cut for his efforts.
@neilsola While UC Berkeley has wants work experience from applicants, your circumstances and extracurriculars in other areas such as clubs and tutoring may overshadow getting an internship. I suggest working on your application essays and try your best in conveying precisely what obstacles you needed to face and how you overcame them. Revise the essays at least ten times for good measure and show it to any professional such as an English teacher for counsel. remember, a WHOOPING 35 PERCENT OF THE APPLICATION IS BASED ON ESSAYS. So make sure you perform to the best of your ability and submit it when you feel 100% confident that your essay is gold. Just remember that the application period ends November 30th, so while you have more than three months. You should start now if not already so you would not have any problems later.
Here’s my stats, if you could chance me that would be great
Major: Sociology
CCC Transfer from Palomar College
GPA: Currently at a 3.92, by the time I transfer I expect it to be around a 3.95
IGETC: Will be done by the end of fall semester
TAP: No
SAT Score: 1320 (I don’t know if they even ask for that)
Pre-Requisites for Major: Already completed
EC’S: Work 20 hours a week for an IT company, Volunteer at a middle school tutoring sheltered English students, play on Football Team, In the Active Minds Club.
Personal Statements: For leadership I talked about how I convinced my parents to adopt one of my teammates because he was getting beaten and neglected by his parents. I talked about my sports background and how hard it was to step away from Football because it was such a significant portion of my life. (For context I had been playing since I was 4 and almost every waking moment of my life went towards playing it, studying it, training with big name coaches across the country, going to camp after camp after camp, etc.) And I’m working on the other two personal Statements right now.
Applying to: UCB (Top Choice), UCLA (2nd Choice), UCSB (TAG), UCSC, Cornell, NYU, and USC.
On kind of a side note, I keep getting emails to join Phi-Theta Kappa since I’m on the deans list, do you think it would be worth joining or am I doing enough stuff as it is?

Age won’t carry as much weight as a strength or weakness as you may think. A mean age of 22 at Haas tells very little given that one of my current classmates is actually 50+. With that being said, another friend of mine is 18.
At the end of the day, it’s about what you’ve learned and grown from through the experiences you’ve had, regardless of age. So if you’re 17 or 55 - you each bring unique and individual experiences that you can leverage to be competitive and contribute to this great school.
Best of luck! I remember how this time last year for me was too.
Hi @Authenticly - I think PTK is mostly helpful for out of state schools, many of whom have PTK specific scholarships. For UC’s I believe it is only really useful if you hold a board position and even then probably only if you contribute in some exceptional way and cover that in one of your insight questions. Check if your PTK chapter offers membership scholarships (where they waive the admission fee) and if you have time (and opportunity) to serve on the board and work fundraisers etc. If it fits in your schedule and will enhance your CC experience then do it, but if it is only to strengthen an application I think the cost outwieghs the benefit at this fairly late stage in your journey.
This is a very basic question, but I could not find an answer.
If anyone can help, I will really appreciate it.
(My son does not have an account with CCC, so I am writing
this for him.)
My son applied for some UC schools two years ago when he was
in high school.
He tried to log back in to his UC account a few days ago, he could not.
I am wondering if he needs to set up a new account.
If he does, will he need to use a new e-mail address?
He already used his e-mail address which he used to open
his original UC account to set up TAG account.
If he used a different e-mail address, I assume he will need to change
his TAG e-mail address also.
Thank you for your help in advance.
@hoppy1 No, he should be able to use the same account. That is what I am doing. I am able to view the one I submitted in 2016 as well as make a new one. He probably just forgot his username or password.
Is anyone here finished with everything needed for transfer to Cal and the other UC’s …60 + sem units, major prereqs, IGETC etc by end of fall 2018? If so do you know if it matters to admissions officers if you don’t take any classes in Spring 2019 and do an internship or just work to save money? My daughter will have completed 2 1/2 yrs at community college end of Fall 2018 and not really into taking 4 more in spring that aren’t really needed…just unsure whether that’s frowned upon. Thinking there are others here in that same boat.
Yes, you can do the internship. Same with UCLA.
@Ohm888 thanks
@neilsola Thank you! UC admission also responded. They said to set up a new account if
my son could not log in using the old information.
My son is in the same situation, but he will be taking some classes he is interested in like photography(UC
transferable).
Just a general question: I’ll have an Associate Degree in Business as well as an Associates Degree for Transfer by the end of Spring 2019. The academic history only gives space for one, so should I list the other in the Additional Information section?
@neilsola I actually just emailed UC admissions yesterday regarding where I should put my other associate degrees. They said to just list the college and the degree that you earned from that college in the additional comments section
@hoppy1 is your son planning on full time classload in spring ?
My son is planning to take three classes in spring to keep his status as a “full time student”.
I meant four classes.
