@2dwayne3904 If you applied to the College of Engineering and want to stay there, you can’t switch majors as a transfer (i.e. to another engineering major). However, you can switch to a major in L&S from CoE (but you can’t switch back so you should be 100% confident in your decision).
@capacapa @stressexpress same i got into ucsb and everyone who goes to ucsb loves it there. but while i know people who hate cal, i also have friends who love cal so im super like torn! im also a lot more into cal because i applied to be in media studies and i like marketing and stuff while at sb business isn’t very like existent… look at me getting ahead of myself here lol im so nervous!!!
Wow I can’t believe there is just 4 days until decisions are released
I love the pearl-clutchers who talk about “safety” at UCB as if that’s a real issue. Have any of these people ever been to a city before? I’d be more afraid of being hit by a stray Goldschlager bottle at UCSB than I would ever be walking around Berkeley.
SO closE yet so FAR … I don’t know how to feel
@Left_hand safety should always be a factor to be considered. Berkeley has around a 90% higher crime rate than the national average and it’s rising. I don’t mean to sound rude, but the differences in gender shows in this situation. These are factors many of us do need to examine.
@stressexpress the crime rate in Berkeley is no different than any other big city.
@Left_hand having been a student there I can attest to the crime being real. There’s bear walk and bear shuttle that operate starting at dusk. Dudes have had guns pulled on them. A gun was pulled on someone in front of me. Guns pulled out on frat row, and in the middle of the day on campus. These are all robbery situations. This is not to scare someone but it is what it is. The Berkeley campus is not especially safe and you need to be vigilante. The last I heard they still refused to put cameras up on the building because it would mar the architecture. That may have changed.
And the people predominantly affected are women so mansplaining with the derogatory pearl-clutching line is kind of not called for. Any day of the week I’d call UCSB, Davis and UCLA way safer.
That makes it sound very scary but to be honest that sounds right of a lot college campus. I went to an out of state university and it was a lot of the same in quiet and family-friendly tiny town. They had late night shuttles set up for safety of students anywhere in town or on campus. There was a series of break-ins , sexual assaults and people getting stabbed and while that sounds terrifying I felt safe the whole time I was living there, you just have to be aware. I also live right near Berkley and while there might be some sketchy drifters around there I have never felt unsafe or threatened while there.
@Ohm888 or Does anyone else know how safety compares to south central LA/USC area? I know the USC area is notorious for crime but every time I’ve been there late at night it doesn’t feel that bad since campus police was always around and the area would always be filled with students, especially frat row. Is UCB anything like that?
I’ve always assumed it’s better but I’m only guessing. And Berkeley is fine, especially northside. You just need to be aware of surroundings and when it starts getting dark travel in twos.
Having grown up in a tough inner-city neighborhood, I guess it’s just second nature for me to be guarded no matter where I’m at. Just some common sense things - don’t walk around with your phone in your hand, have your laptop chained to a desk if possible when in public places, and don’t walk around with expensive headphones or expensive Air Jordan’s. And don’t be out late at night by yourself.
Laptop chained to a desk? um wat
All laptops have a hole for a Kensington laptop lock.
wow I’ve definitely never heard of that. I consider myself to be street smart but I have never chained my laptop to anything before… jeez
@Ohm888 YES HONEY GO OFF
I know I use my Kensington lock everywhere. Maybe it’s passé with the younger students because even my kid at Berkeley hardly uses his, even though that should be the place to use it.
UCLA I’m assuming is a far safer area because it’s in Brentwood, which is one of the richest areas in America most likely. Just a bunch of super privileged people (not judging) in a very wealthy, pristine neighborhood. Compared to Berkeley which is really moreso in a city/urban center location than UCLA. Btw, Brentwood is where OJ and Nicole-Brown Simpson lived so ?
alrighty I’ll keep that in mind when (if) I get to Cal haha
“The overall crime rate in Berkeley is 99% higher than the national average. For every 100,000 people, there are 14.93 daily crimes that occur in Berkeley. Berkeley is safer than 11% of the cities in the United States. In Berkeley you have a 1 in 19 chance of becoming a victim of any crime.” via areavibes
I have a family friend graduate from there and one of my close friends who is a sophomore there and they never had any major safety/crime issues, but that’s just two people so who knows I live in the bay about an hour from UCB and I’ve heard mixed opinions.
