UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

Yeah 17 is young especially considering the average age of admitted Haas transfers was 23. I’m 19 so kinda worried since those older people have spent more time at CC and have had more times to do extracurriculars.

@neilsola hello i was a transfer that got accepted into Uc berkeley last yr. I have never heard age being a factor oof the admission process. I just want to give you some advise. Even if you have one EC or 100EC it depends on how you were able to grow and reflect it on the essay. Academics are just as important but the only way the UCs can differentiate you is through your personality(which is noticeable on your essay) so I would not be so worried about how many ECs you have. You got this!

@neilsola as I think you know, ECs are crucial for Haas (especially leadership/biz-related), as well as essays. I just want to make that clear in terms of Berkekey’s school of business, which is very different from other majors.

And I do think Haas puts more emphasis on age, but 19 is the age most native Berkeley students are applying.

Is anyone else struggling to give the UCLA and UCB advisors what they want from the PIQs? I feel like they want completely different things covered within an extremely limited character count, and I am getting a lot of “just be yourself except, like, not.” I would very much like to run off into the forest at this stage of the application process

hi I am a freshman at UCR but I have sophomore standing meaning that I have a lot of AP and college credit. Should I apply to UCB haas now or should i wait a year?

If you will have 60 semester/90 quarter by end of spring you will be applying as a junior despite being a freshman. But I don’t know how you can have major req and most GE done by end of spring (but maybe you can).

My hunch is you should wait.

Hey everyone I was wondering if y’all could chance me.

Major: EECS

CCC Transfer from Diablo Valley College

GPA: 4.00

Completed classes: Gen Chem I and II, Calc I and II, both English classes needed, various smaller classes like Stats, anthropology, engineering courses. 47 Units completed right now

Current classes: Calc 3, Linear Algebra, Intro to programming, and Physics for engineers: Mechanics and Wave Motion

Spring classes: Differential Equations, Physics for Engineers: Electromagnetism and Heat, Advanced C++, wanted to self teach discrete math and take Data Structures and Machine Structures.

Programs: TAP, SPMP, Raíces, MESA, EOPS

Ethnicity: Hispanic (half Puerto Rican, half Salvadoran)

Gender: Male

Income: Poor lol

State: California, been here the Bay since I was 4

Hooks: First gen, was a realtor for a year, have led workshops for MESA which involve Chem and making people better at it, I’ve been head of my household since I was 18, support my mother and I.

Pre-Requisites for Major: Will be completed by Spring 2019. Will not have strongly recommend courses done in time because I need a computer science class done before I can take two others but plan to do it Summer 2019. I talked to someone in admissions and they said it was ok because they were not prereqs.

EC’S: Have volunteered around DVC during events like welcome week, take notes for disabled people at DVC, I’m an SI facilitator for MESA, volunteer at MESA each week, did the Berkeley Project this past weekend, helped cleaned a library in Pleasant Hill, tutor kids as a job, AGS, Honors on my transcript. Have attended various events that UC Berkeley has hosted.

Personal Statements: Struggling with all of these because of nerves but for the required one, planning to talk about how I’ve always been interested in tech but because of certain circumstances was not able to go school and have internships/research, have had to self teach myself what I know about in-depth tech knowledge. For leadership will talk about either my time as a real estate agent and how I had to lead people and act as a support system for them. For greatest skill I’m writing about my ability to adapt and my independence.

Thoughts: Biggest fear right now is making sure I kill it on the PIQs. My ECs aren’t really related to tech but I’ve heard I need one more computer science class before I can be considered for them. Also the fact that I don’t have the strongly recommended classes.

Hi guys, I’m applying to transfer to UC Berkeley as a psychology major for next fall and I was just wondering what you think my chances are!

Stats:

3.67 GPA
Multiple psychology course, lowest grade was a B in lifespan psych.
I got an A in my statistics class and have also taken multiple Spanish classes in which I received A’s as well.

I am a part of my CC’s honor society and have done various volunteer work in the past such as helping my school district produce their summer school play for their enrichment program. I currently tutor both special needs and general education students while doing the occasional house sitting.

I am a non traditional student, I had my son at 18 and his father and I are married. He is currently enlisted in the military so I have been raising him on my own since birth.

I know I do not have a lot of extracurriculars in the traditional “clubs and sports” sense, but I have been raising my son alone while maintaining a GPA I’m proud of and working.

Thank you all so much for your time!

How does UC berkeley view C’s. I explained how I got them in my PIQ.

Major: Computer Science
GPA: 4.0
Extracurriculars: Math tutor (volunteer)
Job/Work Experience: planing on working at my school
Personal Statement: pretty much done with them

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Computer Science
State (if domestic applicant): California
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: Lower middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): first generation immigrant.

Strengths: GPA
Weaknesses: I’ve literally done nothing lol. No internships at local companies. No hackathons.

I don’t think I have a good chance but might as well apply anyways.

Thank You!

Did you apply to Berkeley’s TAP program? It would give you a pretty good shot. You qualify as first gen. But it’s probably too late if you didn’t sign up.

Hey everyone, been worrying a lot lately… so I thought some reassurance or a ‘chance me’ might help, hahaaa.

CCC Transfer from San Diego Miramar College
Major: EECS / Computer Science
Gender / Ethnicity: Male / Indian
Income Bracket / State: Upper-middle class / CA
Prereqs: All completed this semester. I’m just taking classes required for other schools next semester.

GPA: 3.63 currently, will be a 3.74 by the end of this semester

Extracurriculars: Volunteer Math tutor for 2 semesters, Astronomy Research Seminar, Practical Robotics club (only attended for 1 semester), Engineering club, Creative Writing club (also for 1 semester), joined a Machine Learning group outside of my school (mostly graduate students, focuses on Kaggle projects and teaching ML to others), NASA Community College Scholars program, Exoplanet Research team

Job/Work Experience: Worked at a donut shop over the summer. I’m currently employed as a tutor for my school. I’ll have 2 jobs and possibly an internship next semester.

Personal Statements: I’m feeling a little uneasy on them tbh – a professor reviewed them and told me they are pretty good though. I’m going to get more people to review it this week.

Hooks: I have a research paper being published right now (I can show proof on my application as well). I also do a lot of projects on my own time (have done some work with the NSynth, a Google/Magenta project). I produce music as well.

Strengths: I would assume my extracurriculars are pretty decent… but I still feel like I haven’t done enough. I have also taken most of my major required classes as honors.

Weaknesses: GPA (mostly my major GPA since I got a B in both of my Calculus classes :’( )

I’ve been really anxious about my application. Really feeling like I won’t get in due to my low GPA, especially because it’s EECS. I did fall sick towards the end of my first semester, which killed my GPA but… I don’t have a doctor’s note to show for it. I really want to go to Cal but I keep fearing that they’ll auto-reject because of my GPA.

Do you think it might be worth it if I apply as a different major? I really want to do EECS but I heard a lot of CS students can still take a few EE courses.

Thanks in advance!

@Skyc98 I am talking about Haas. there has to be a reason why the average age was 23.

@Ohm888 Yes it makes sense that the average age for current Berkeley students applying to Haas is around 19/20 since most ppl are around 18 when they graduate high school. I really hope i get into Haas my gpa is 3.85 and i have several on campus extracurriculars but no internships since I have to help my mom around the house since she’s a single mother and there’s no way I’d have time to commute.

@hopesolo can you give me some tips on the essays? Do I auge to be vulnerable? I know I have to be real and it all about me. But sadly I suck at writing essays.

@Iwishforhaas Starting kinda late don’t ya think?

Hello everyone! Was wondering if someone could chance me into getting accepted into UC Berkeley.
I’ll be applying as a transfer this semester from a California Community College.

Major: Urban Studies

GPA: 3.70 with likely to reach 3.76 by the end of next month when the semester ends. Potential of 3.79 by my next semester.

IGETC: Completed

Major Prep: 2 courses are not articulated or available within a 50-mile radius. However, I was able to get the rest of the major prep courses that were available at my community college completed. There are no C grades on my transcript.

Class Withdrawals: 3

Background: Low income, have multiple disabilities, and gained FAFSA independent status before age 24. Had a take a gap year due to extreme circumstances due to family and financial barriers. Faced many hardships throughout my life due to disability and societal acceptance.

EC: Attended various disability advocacy workshops, attended a leadership conference focused on disability law and rights, participated at an Urban Planning summit, interned at several nonprofit organizations, member of my County’s Mental Health Committee.

Personal Statements: Very strong. Discussed how my interests aligned with the majors I applied, hardships, and challenges that I have overcome throughout my life. My college writing tutor was very impressed by my responses.

I also applied to UCLA’s Public Affair’s major and UC Davis’s Cognitive Science major.

If any of you are majoring in Philosophy, feel free to reach out! I transferred from BCC in 2016 and I’m finishing my last semester now. I’m also planning to apply to graduate school in philosophy. I’m happy to answer any questions y’all might have – including questions about the departments at other UC’s.

Good luck everyone!

@duranceau951 This is the first year that Data Science is a major at Berkeley, and the onslaught of people who has applied is amazing. I don’t think a BTS concert could attract as many people.

All jokes aside, it’s hard to tell how open the DS department will be with accepting transfers since this is the first year, but having a 4.0 can’t hurt. Lower Division requirements that you should already have would be similar to CS requirements, ie 1 year of Calc plus Diff Equations and Linear Algebra, and hopefully a Data Structures class. That would only leave you with the Data 8 and CS 61A to complete in order to declare. (Probably a bridge class for CS61B will be required also).

@ProfessorPlum168 Yeah, there is a high level of competition for this major, so I’m a little worried. However, I will be going in as a statistics major. If I don’t make it into the data science program, I’ll just stick with that! That is what I first wanted to go in as before I saw there was a data science major.

By the time I graduate from the Santa Rosa Junior College I will have my Associates degree in Computer Science, Math and Economics. So I will have all computer science requirements done including some not required. I’m already done with my math requirements and will self study statistics on my own in the spring and summer.

I’ve already taken the online portion of Data 8x that UC Berkeley provides and really loved that! It was nice since my college doesn’t offer Python classes.
