@neurosa Thank you so much, I honestly did NOT think I would get in.
Let me try to break down a little more.
I graduated HS in 2005, I’m 32 now. I was a psychology major, who went to community college out of state, then transferred to a university out of state and dropped out of school in 2007 due to undiagnosed epilepsy. When I dropped out I had two full semesters with all W’s.
I started working and only recently went back to school (10 year gap). During that time I was out I worked for animal rescues and learned permaculture through traveling with WWOOF (world wide organization of organic farmers).
When I returned to school I was working full time and taking 14-16 units a semester. My cumulative UC transferable was a 3.6, my overall GPA was 3.8 (I think I stated that wrong previously).
My EC’s were working for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (one of my personal insights was related to losing my friend to suicide and becoming involved this way). I also volunteer at beach clean ups, work with animals, taught myself 3 coding languages. I also am a graffiti artist, and play guitar and bass.
My personal insights I wrote about overcoming my epilepsy and learning about having a brain cyst that causes my seizures, my friend committing suicide and how he inspired my art and involvement with that organization, and being an autodidact. My explanation as to why I chose Philosophy largely centered around it finding me-- through my desire to learn, understand, and communicate with the world around me.
I actually applied to Berkeley as a senior in 2005, and when I got rejected it killed me. I moved out of state with family and when I finally re enrolled in CCC it was a nightmare trying to get my credits transferred (I ended up having to retake math and English).
Upon application I am still completing my ENG 103 and MATH 100. I did not qualify for TAG anywhere, or honors, or fully complete my IGETC.
I honestly believe that my essays were extremely strong and showed understanding of who I am, who I was, and where I want to go.
It really sucks that you didn’t get in, but if you can take anything from my story, it doesn’t mean you can’t get in later. Keep pressing on, keep learning.
