UC Berkeley Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@XOcrew75 Would you mind posting your stats?

@lizzyyykkk http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2018.pdf

Take a look at pages 36-37. Under “Factors considered in comprehensive review” there are some factors. One of those factors is “Location of the student’s college and residence”.

But I don’t think it is such a big deal. Certainly, it is not as important as completing prereqs or having a competitive GPA.

TBH, if location plays any part it might be more as a way to protect the yield if, say, UCLA thinks an applicant is more likely to stay in Bay Area rather than relocate to LA.

@willowstil my major is poli sci. That’s worth a try, maybe I’ll call next week just to see.

@AeroDE
most of them had zero ec and wrote their essays really last min. one of my friends didnt even start his essay until the due deadline and lied about being affected by the fire to have an extended deadline which i was so upset about

@GaussX
yaa its just weird because on this thread, people with high GPAs and great EC got rejected so I was just confused tbh

I know of many people who lied about being affected by the fires who don’t even live near the fires.

About to do my housing application. Will doing it earlier help get better housing? Do people usually get their first or second choice preferences? I heard its super hard to get housing which makes me super scared. I don’t want to get placed in a dorm w/ freshmen… I heard on campus apartments are hard to get?

I was accepted for Spring 2020.
Would you guys take that offer and start in the spring or go to UCLA in the fall instead?

What is the best housing for transfers?

@Jay.C - Depends what your major is for both schools.

@lizzyyykkk I use to think it was complete BS when Berkeley and UCLA said they take a “holistic approach” to applications but I think it’s true now. They look at so many aspects outside of grades. Everyone from my school thought they’d get in cause there was a rumor SMC college got priority which is silly, but lots got rejected even though their GPA was way above the average for the major. I wish I was a fly in the admissions office when they inspect the applications haha.

@NonTradtional Political Science major for both

@Xocrew75 What was your gpa?

Admitted!!!

Major: Political science
Major pre-requisites: Completed
IGETC: Complete prior to transferring
GPA: 3.76

Other important info that I’m sure put weight on my application:

  • Part of various educational prep programs at my community college and under multiple UCs (Part of Cal's Starting Point Mentorship Program for three semesters and the Transfer Alliance Project.)
  • Extensive volunteer and community service
  • Multiple scholarships awarded during my time enrolled at my community college
  • Work on-campus at the Career & Transfer Services Center and EOPS/CalWORKs Office so both have helped me become engrossed in the transfer/academic process
  • Former Interim Chair & current Vice President of Executive Affairs of my college's student government
  • Current Vice President of my college's Alpha Gamma Sigma chapter

Pretty strong personal insight questions responses. I had them reviewed many times by counselors, transfer coordinators, and multiple UC Berkeley admissions officers.

Congratulations to those who have been admitted and good luck to everyone!!! :slight_smile:

.

Hi I just SIRed and got access to a link telling me to make a calnet, but when i sign in through map, it says “this page is forbidden”
does anyone else have this problem/know what to do? maybe i just need to give it 24 hours…

@lenardizag

Hi. In response to your post:

"Family member had a 4.0 GPA (all pre reqs complete, very good essays, and worked while in school) as a political science major and was waitlisted while others with 3.7-3.8 are getting in. The system is so flawed.

UCLA is his number one choice, however, so the gambling continues."

I work at my school’s Career & Transfer Center and I’m part of Cal’s Starting Point Mentorship Program and Transfer Alliance Project. The system isn’t “flawed.” UC Berkeley and the entire UC system look at applications holistically and comprehensively. They want to know applicants and their academic performance, yes, although they want to get to know applicants outside of the classroom as well. Many applicants with extremely high GPAs and perfect GPAs of 4.0 get rejected – it’s not uncommon.

Again, it’s comprehensive.

Congrats!!! If you do not mind, could I know the major GPA? and if
it is not 4.0, I also wonder what grades you got from which classes!
Thanks to sharing your information!

hey guys! for the financial aid tasks, what is the “tiv release?” is it just something that i need to accept right away? thanks! and also when does housing application start?

@Ohm888 Which number should we call if we want to ask about why we were rejected? The advising office of the college we applied to?
