UC Berkeley Haas 2018 Transfer Thread

Hey Guys I’m a future applicant for haas fall 2019 and I need some advice. I’ll receive 2 B’s this semester and they’re major pre reqs so my gpa after fall grades inputted in the future assuming i get all A’s will be 3.89. Unfortunately, my mother was hospitalized after a heart attack and so I had to divert all my attention to her and fully take care of the family clothing business by myself (you can check bio for stats it explains what I do). My life just became worse after hearing my uncle died. I’ve further become depressed and guilty after not being able to go to his funeral because of my exams that I couldn’t get stellar marks in (his burial was in pakistan). Is there anything I can do besides what I’ve already done according to my stats to get into UC berkeley haas? Do i still have a good chance?

Hi! I had a question for the accepted applicants-- how do I create my CalNet ID? I can’t find the activation page

Hey @GoodAfternoonSir ! I’m really sorry to hear about all of the hardship you’ve gone through. In terms of your application, I’d use the essays to talk about challenges and how you overcame them. Being able to grow and learn from struggles is really important (student always). Best of luck next year and I hope your mom’s health improves!

@GoodAfternoonSir

You’ve probably heard this before but as long as your GPA is in the average spectrum (approximately 3.8-4.0) then you should just focus on maintaining it. Try and have all your pre-reqs done by the end of fall 2018 (IMO this will give you the edge over a lot of other applicants) but 3.89 is damn good so just maintain that.

I hope your mum is feeling better now and I’m sorry about your uncle. Honestly, admission officers love reading about “persistence in the face of adversity” type of stories so definitely leverage your hardships into your essays and talk about how you overcame them. Everyone will have the GPA so it’s up to your essays to really do the talking. And please, start AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!! I can’t emphasize that enough. I started my UC essays in the June prior to applications. You can definitely do the leadership question in the PIQs and use the family business example of your leadership experience. Haas also as its own supplemental essay so it’s absolutely crucial that you hit a home run on that one. Learn about the 4 defining principles and think about how you relate to them. Read the haas undergraduate wordpress and use this website to your advantage. Learn about the undergrad life at Haas! It has some great articles. Also, look into SPMP (Starting Point Mentorship Program)

I don’t think I had strong ECs myself do something you’re passionate about and commit to it. But Don’t talk about all these different clubs you joined, rather, talk about the one or two clubs you joined and made an impact. My main EC was being a math tutor which i absolutely love doing.

Haas is leaning more and more towards interview so get familiar with some basic behavioral questions (We even discussed some questions on this thread so utilize that).

All the best and remember, it’s never too early to start. :slight_smile:

@HaasieBear I’m having trouble with the the calnet ID too! And its due in one week haha. I sent an email and hoping to hear a response soon. Any other admits have an answer?

Are you going to do precore this summer?

@HaasieBear @Ak1097 Thank you guys for the advice, it’s nice to know that a 3.89 doesn’t mean the end of the world. Unfortunately I’m going to have calc 2 in the spring next year but that’s the only one left I need to complete. In order to “redeem” myself and make up for the b’s I got this semester I’m taking 12 units in the summer and 24 units in the fall. I swear I’m going to work as hard as humanely possible in order to get all A’s and show haas who I really am. As for the essays I’ve actually finished a rough draft of them and I’m going to show them to my UC Berkeley representative in may. I also send a copy to my SPMP mentor so she can give a few pointers. One of the classes I’m taking in the summer is English which I figured would be great not just to knock off that requirement but to be in touch personally with an English professor. I will be showing her my essays too. I really like what @thi1998 did about having the application sorta “connect and relate together”. That’s smart so that the reader can be more invested in my application and that will turn the tide in my favor. See the problem isn’t about what I can provide in my circumstances but in reality what SHOULD I provide. I’ve been dealt with so many problems in life that’s it’s hard to count but just to point out a few: I was trapped in Pakistan for three years and missed out on three years of education because of the bombings happening on all the schools, embassies, businesses, you name it. It just wasn’t safe for me. So 5th, 6, and 7th grade I didn’t have an education at all. I literally missed out on basic arithmetic practice, basic grammar, speaking skills, everything a kid is supposed to learn in their lives I had to learn on 8th grade and so on. It was hell for me to learn everything while enrolled in algebra 1and other classes that were deemed basic to an average student in high school. I didn’t even know what anything was! Also, after 6 months returning to the United States my father was burned alive in a truck accident. I couldn’t see my dad for three years and when I came back home I couldn’t even recognize him. Because of my mom and I trapped there my father couldn’t handle the family restaurant and his trucking business and so everything just became ashes and my father became the person he used to hire to transport his goods, a truck driver. All and any funds just washed away trying to get me and mom back home. My home got foreclosured and even though we eventually came back, we’ve sacrificed a lot to do so. 6 months after my father finally got approved for a loan to rebuild his company again and that’s when the accident happened. And after that me, a 13 year old kid began to have heart issues. It’s bad enough that I have type 1 diabetics and kidney problems but I guess that wasn’t enough. There’s much more to my story this is just a summary of 2 really important experiences in my life. By not having an education and looking at so many people in Pakistan who would die to have what we have, it’s important to realize that you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. I’m just 18 but back when I was in middle school and beyond people thought I was much older because of the way I handle situations in general and how I perceive everything. So yeah that’s just a little glimpse into my life. I really want an interview from haas because if I do I can tell them my full story and give them a whole picture of me as a fellow person. So yeah I’m going to try to condense all this I told you and more so I can provide as much info as I can.

Yes! Kind of lazy to post stats tho :confused: @kt_ay

@TSHaas91 It’s due April 30th (tomorrow) and I still have no idea how to do it

@TSHaas91 Wait! I think I got it!

Okay so first go on to your Dashboard and click on the task. Then, click on the “Get my CalNet ID”.

Then it will send you to a log in page and you just choose to log in with your Map account on the lower righthand corner.

Next, it’ll direct you to another page and there will be a button that says “Create CalNet ID” and it’ll direct you to another page where you can make it!

@Ak1097 Oh man no way!!! What are your next steps? Man, I wish I hadn’t said anything about the waitlist - I had af feeling I’d be proved wrong. But perhaps that’s better than nothing and there’s still a chance! I don’t know how many they waitlist, maybe not as much compared to other schools? Crossing my fingers for you!

@HaasieBear @TSHaas91 Just a heads up guys - it can take up to a day for it to come off from your task list! A lot of the things that I completed weren’t shown as “completed” immediately, even though I had it all set up. The process can be kinda funky, but just keep hopping around and it’ll show.

TBH - learning the new system is a little daunting! All this after I’ve finally figured out how to navigate my CC system :)) What an exciting time.

@hopesolo I was expecting to have a waitlist number but didn’t get anything like that. I also haven’t seen anyone else being waitlisted for Haas yet, on this thread or the general UCB thread, so hoping for the best. I opted into the waitlist and there was an optional essay for that. It didn’t have a prompt but just said something like “Use this as an opportunity to tell us more about yourself.” It kind of implied that they wanted to know about my post application journey. Now I have to wait until or after Jun 1 to hear back. Got into USC Marshall just a few hours before hearing from haas lol so if Haas doesn’t work out then ill be omw to So-Cal! :slight_smile:

@HaasieBear @hopesolo thanks for the help…i figures it out!

Can anyone explain how housing works for transfers? Are we guaranteed 1 year of on campus housing? If not, is it based on a first-come, first-serve basis? Maybe @briank82 can help answer this? I’m so lost. Thanks in advance!

Is everyone going to do the PreCore program?

@beontheroad021 I actually may not be able to. My summer schedule is a little full since I wasn’t fully sure I was going to get into Haas. I will see later in May if I will be able to join, but as of right now it seems pretty hard for me. I really wish I could though.

@beontheroad021 I definitely will!

@Ak1097 Hoping for the best for you too! That optional essay sounds like a good opportunity to provide some more info, so hopefully you are able to make use of it. Wishing you the best of luck - keep us posted!

I’ll be attending summer precore! I’d love to meet some you!!

ACCEPTED TO HAAS

Currently go to community college in Southern California

3.80 GPA Overall

Extracurriculars include Student Govt for a year, CFO of Business Club on campus, as well as shadowing at a big bank.

In my essays, wrote about an app I’ve been working on for the past year, and the process I’ve had to go through to ensure its success. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON MY ESSAYS. THAT’S WHAT GOT ME IN. I also had an interview from Haas for anyone that was wondering.

The bad news: Because I spent so much time on my app, I had to drop calc 2 in my spring semester because I was falling behind. So unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend Haas in the fall. I’m already enrolled in a summer Calc 2 class and I just contacted admissions but they informed me that they don’t defer at all, so I have to reapply for spring semester! :// total blow to the head but I still have to hear back from a couple other schools so I’m hoping to possibly get into one.

Other schools: UCSB (accepted), UCLA (denied), Virginia, Emory, Michigan (denied all), still waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt, Babson, and USC

I had horrendous high school grades which explains why I was denied from non-CA schools which require high school transcripts.

I’m currently filling out the admissions update form which explains why I dropped calc 2 and what my plans are for the summer. I’m really hoping they understand and possibly grant admission for spring!
