UC Berkeley Haas 2019 Transfer Thread

Don’t know if any of you experience this. I was supposed to have my interview today at 9:30am PST. I dialed in, but could not connect. I only see myself through the screen, but no interviewer. About to call them, but they will not be opening till 10am on Tuesday, so I am confused now. I’ve sent email as they said with the screenshots of what was happening. Hope it will be resolved soon!

@anhvo105 oh no! Please keep us updated on what they say. Maybe they’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties with the new system. Good luck! My interview is tomorrow.

Phew! I got an email back from the Program Manager, and luckily it was the interviewer’s fault to not showing up, so no penalties on my end. Got rescheduled for 2pm PST today. Hopefully it will go well.

@anhvo105 Thank goodness. Hey, thanks for the update and good luck. I’m sure you’ll do great!

Good luck to everyone interviewing today! Mines at 3:30 and I’m so nervous, but reading all your comments have definitely put me at ease. We all got this!

I’ll be sure to report back afterwards.

@Makemeabear Take deep breaths and slow your breathing down, you got this!! Ahhh, how exciting!!! Good luck!

Hey guys, I just finished my interview, and these are some of the questions they did ask me:

  1. Why would you choose Business major?
  2. Why did you choose Berkeley and how will you contribute your experiences to UCB?
  3. Describe a situation or event or organization where you show your leadership skill
  4. If someone just meets you for the first time, how would you describe yourself to them?
  5. Tell me an example when you have to work with people coming from different backgrounds than yours and what did you learn from them
  6. Describe a time when you are different (Meaning you have a different opinion from everyone else or able to speak up) - Really give out an example on this.
  7. Do you have any questions for me? - Definitely YES YES and YES

I hope this helps guys!

@anhvo105 Interesting questions. Was the interview audio only or with the webcam too?

@neisola, it is with webcam

Just finished my interview! It was great, the interviewer was a Haas alum and was very down to earth and made me feel comfortable throughout the process.

Main questions asked were:

  1. Why do you want to study Business?
  2. Why made you want to apply to Berkeley specifically? What can you contribute to the community?
  3. Describe a situation or event or organization where you show your leadership skill
  4. If someone just meets you for the first time, how would you describe yourself to them?
  5. Tell me an example when you have to work with people coming from different backgrounds than yours and what did you learn from them
  6. Describe a time when you are different and had a difference of opinion, how did you handle this?
  7. Do you have any questions for me?
  8. If you have anything else you want to share that you haven’t please do so.

Some of the questions led to a follow up quick questions.

I have no idea how to feel about my chances now, but I hope we can all get admitted and celebrate soon!

@ashleymp Thank you! I definitely re-read that comment right before the interview!

@Makemeabear @anhvo105 Yay!! Sounds like both of your interviews went well. Thank you for sharing some of the questions that were asked. I’ll let you know how mine goes tomorrow night. Eek!

@ashleymp Wishing you the best of luck! Knock it out of the park and report back!

I do not receive any email from Hass after submitting my supplemental essay. But reading the questions they asked during the interview, I have a feeling that they would interview you just because those question was not clearly revealed from your Personal Insight and Essays.

Anyway, still pray as I do not want to move to LA.

A little bit about me.
I will finish 122 units this Spring because I studied Business and Pathway to Law.

GPA: 4.0

Im a returning student after 15 years working. I take care of my daughter and my husband is a disabled veteran. I just immigrated into the US 2.5 years ago and am the first generation attending college.

I think my essays were fine just because I did have a lot of working experience for the last 16 years to show who I am. But I wrote it in hurry within 6 hours before submitting as I was super busy studying, working and my husband was hospitalized that month, etc.

However, hope I can get into this school.

@Makemeabear Thanks for your comments!! How long did the interview last? I know they say 20 minutes but can you extend to say 30 minutes? I feel like I have so much to say

You spent 6 hours on all your essays? Honestly, I probably spent 150+ hours on my essays. The essays are the most important part of the application. I’m very sorry you have to deal with those things… Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get in.

Last night I did login into UC Application to read what I wrote and I still think it is good. Because I was Personal Assistant for different CEOs and Representative in some international companies, I did run my own charity fund, then later ran my own business, I had a lot of materials to answer the Insight questions. I did think about how to answer it from August until September but I changed my mind so often. And the semester was super busy to study 21 units and work 20hours per week. Then within the last 6 hours, I just forced myself to chose one for each question and write down what I thought.

In the supplemental essay, I had more time to think about it and just told them how I became the founder of my own charity fund - I actually was a member from a different charity group and later was voted to be a leader before running my own one.

Because I have studied English by myself for years, I think that essay describes me best so that I did not want to ask my professors for opinions.

@haasornothing Mine was 30 minutes on the dot! So I wouldn’t worry to much about trying to keep your answers so short you stay under 20 mins!

Good luck!

Thanks for your response! I don’t want to scare you — I just don’t want you to be discouraged if you don’t get in. It seems like you think the essays are an area where you can regurgitate your resumé. Rather, it’s a place to share your personality and the way you think–not your achievements.

For example, I’ve created many top-charting apps, instructed a best-selling online course and gave a Tedx talk. I have a 4.0 and I’m 21 years old. In the essay’s I did not directly talk about these achievements. Instead, I focused on giving the admission committee insight into my way of thinking, motivations and values. This took me a LONG time. Honestly, it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

I don’t think anyone can write GREAT essays in 6 hours. Just know that if you don’t get in, it’s not because you’re not qualified. However, there’s still a chance! Good luck!
