UC Berkeley Haas School of Business

I know there have been a number of threads here before (believe me, I've read them :P) but by and large they seem more alarmist than informative.

First of all, I'm planning on applying to Haas this fall, or at least that has been my plan. I've been bouncing back and forth between confidence and extreme anxiety over the application... I know that chances aren't great even with incredible "stats". My first question is whether you're still accepted to UC Berkeley even if you're rejected from Haas. I heard that if you don't get in, they don't even necessarily check your second major. Anyone know about this? And I'm also wondering what people think of my chances... here is roughly what I have:

-3.94 cumulative (I got a B and my school doesn't do +'s or -'s unfortunately)
-I've taken 2 summer courses at Berkeley, I'm in them now but I expect A's (not sure if this is in any way beneficial, anyone have a clue?)
-I will have completed all my prereq's(duh) and breadths by the time they see my application.
-I have an International Baccalaureate Diploma
-Mostly 4's/5's on AP tests
-I have a number of Berkeley campus EC's BUT
-NO ec's from my own CC, going to try to rectify this in the fall semester as best as I am able, but because I live so far from the campus it is difficult.

Thats about it. I'm wondering if people think I should bother applying to Haas or should I just apply for english/econ? Also it is important to note that I really can't leave Berkeley for personal reasons, so I won't be applying to other UC's. Just wish this whole thing was over, I'm getting anxious just typing this out haha.

Thanks for your time :]

P.s. Any other Haas applicants out there? Toss your names up here, would be good to chat.

P.P.S Any advice former applicants/transfers to Haas would be GREATLY appreciated.

I think I will be applying for Haas as well. I would like to hear other people's advice for you. My case is different from yours though, since I am applying for an intercampus UC transfer.

Wilderr, you've done a great job. I would apply to Haas this fall, but a college class I took while in high school screwed it up for me. I guess you have to pay even for your past..

I wouldn't be too anxious about getting into Haas. 3.94 is a damn nice GPA, and the fact that you've already been exposed to the Berkeley academic lifestyle AND you're succeeding in them is sure to be a good sign to admission officers. It shows them you're taking the initiative to get (even further) ahead.

You are allowed to apply to different colleges within Berkeley, so let's say, hypothetically, that you don't get admitted into Haas. You'll still have a shot at the other.

I say apply to both Haas and Letters & Science for Economics/English and you'll be in one of them for sure.

Good luck,
BanditGirl :)

Thanks very much for your reply Bandit :]

No problem.

BanditGirl

Wilderr, according to the current statistics posted, your gpa is above the average, which is a good sign :):

<a href="http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/statstransfer.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/statstransfer.html</a></p>

Scroll down on this page and you'll see a percentage breakdown of factors affecting admission:

I applied to Haas from a CCC and didn't get in, but I did spend a lot of time on this forum reading the stats of those who got accepted. Wilderr, your gpa is great, just got to work on the ECs at your CC, cause many people on this forum had great ECs on top of their stellar grades.

Mr. Sparkle, what were your stats like? Do you know why you might have been denied admission?

sup. im applyin. although, my gpa aint nowhere near yours. lol. also, the unit limit kicks in for you, so be careful. if you wanna talk, drop me a message.

Can you really do this? Cause I saw the UC apps and Berkeley is the only UC that does not offer alternative major. How can you apply to both Haas and Letter & Science major then?

socalgal20, My GPA was very low. So low that I shouldn't of even applied, but I decided to apply anyways since I accumulated so many units at my local CC. Make sure you fulfill all of the prereqs and general breadth courses. Now that I think about it, I might not of fulfilled the international studies requirement, which requires 2 courses involving countries other than the U.S or 2 courses with another country & U.S. I took Political Science and Asian Civilization. Because Political Science is a US gov. course, it probably didn't fulfill the requirements under international studies:

<a href="http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/breadth_list.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/breadth_list.html</a></p>

Bandit, where did you see that you can apply to two schools in UCB? If you look on the application there is no spot for an alternative major. If there was I imagine most kids would do Haas/econ. That being said I think you have excellent stats and have a good chance. I think you should try to get in after you have worked so hard for it. It is a big risk though since a lot of the applicants have similiar stats as you. If anything you just wait one more year if you get rejected and apply for a different major. In any case, I will also be applying this fall.

GPA: 3.93
EC: I work full time in the field i wish to study (for several years)
Prereqs: done at time of application
breadth:done at time of application

No fancy stuff but I have been working full time and been going to school full time at the same time so maybe they will take that into consideration as well. I may get a B in calculus this semester. That may derail me a little bit. I am confident I will end up where ever I am supposed to be though. :)

cal doesn't take alts. if you apply to haas and don't get in, you don't get into cal.

^agreed. thats just plain wrong.

To the OP: do you go Sierra Vista?

I go to the City College of San Francisco actually...

I'm still very worried about the fact that you can't get in if Haas rejects :/

^ Apply to other UCs. Why can't you leave the Berkeley area?

Long story short = girlfriend. I'd already be at another UC if that was what I'd wanted.

That aside, Haas really has been my goal, so the choice is basically whether to apply to Haas, or some other school @ berkeley I'm not interested in.

If you want to be dead sure about getting into Berkeley, I'd say apply into English or Econ. You can always enter a MBA program for grad school.

And from what I hear from my homie (He's a Haashole), Haas is basically a watered-down MBA program anyway.

P.S. Apply to other UCs just in case. I almost considered not applying to Berkeley because I was really set on UCLA. Then I broke up with my girlfriend and some other **** happened which made me come to Berkeley. In other words, don't pigeonhole yourself. Sixty bucks is a cheap price to pay to have several other options come May.

Best wishes, Cardinal :)

You have great advice, and it is well taken. I've actually been planning on applying to UCLA as well, as its always good to leave room for the unknown. But unless something major changes, I'd rather flip burgers in Berkeley for a year than head back south :).

A college counselor told me Berkely allows students to apply to more than one school. But I think you're right, Sweetny007, there is no place on the application that allows for alternative majors.

I guess Cal likes to make it tough, but it only makes admission that much sweeter.

BanditGirl

Yeah, Cal doesn't have space for an alternate major.

The other UCs allow you to list an alternative major. Though I heard somewhere, they only consider they alternative major if you are TAP certified.
