Hey guys, just finished my housing app. Where you guys thinking of staying at? If you applied for dorms, what were your choices?

Mine were all Unit 1. Loved the social atmosphere there and its close proximity to the asian ghetto.

Why is the housing on-campus at Berkeley so freakin’ pitiful? I had a nicer room living in Army barracks in Korea for God’s sake, and they paid me. It’s unbelievable that they expect $900 for a tiny double occupancy room in an apartment where 4 people live with just one bathroom. They expect you to live like an animal. Seriously, what is everyone else doing?

Wada apartments are the cheapest option considering that I can get more out of FAFSA living on campus. Channing-Bowditch doesn’t even count as living on campus, and the apartments are extremely cramped.

I put Wada as my first 2 preferences, then Channing-Bowditch, unit 2 mini suite, then any location…

i emailed the housing dept. and they said that Towle at Unit 2 is specifically reserved for upperclassmen and transfers…so that’s another possibility if you don’t want to get stuck with the frosh…

it’s ridiculous that dorm rates go up to $15,000…

@Dem Bones: i thought Wada was considered off-campus?

Are they? I assumed because Berkeley Housing added, “Channing-Bowditch is considered off campus for budgetary purposes with the Financial Aid Office.” to the bottom of that web page that they would have done the same thing with the Wada apartments page. Plus the Wada apartments, while technically “off campus”, they would still count towards financial aid as “on-campus” as they are part of Unit 2.

Well, this just keeps getting worse.

hmm…on the housing application, it says:

“Financial Aid recipients: Please note that apartment residents are only eligible for the off-campus financial aid student budget, which is approximately $3,000 less than the on-campus package.”

And Wada is listed as an APT under the preferences…so that’s why i thought they were considered off-campus…

Just found this on the Living at Cal site:

Wada Apartments: 175 students, 1 staff, double and triple single gender apartments. This transfer, upper-division students’ hall is located in the Unit 2 complex and is reserved for Juniors and Seniors only and has special programming geared toward your needs. Academic year contracts only; these are on the same schedule as Residence Halls, but are considered off campus for financial aid reasons.

Thx, kitkat. I haven’t actually started filling out the housing application stuff because I have no idea what I am going to do. Thx for the help though. Now, I am definitely leaning towards just a regular apartment.

Just do what I am doing. Stay an extra day or two after CalSo and go bike around until you find a decent apartment very close to campus. My apartment right now at SDSU is closer to the school than some of the dorms which is the kind of thing I am looking for. The interconnectedness with other students and friends is still there and among other reasons it is much better. I have never been to Berkeley before and know nothing about location though.

Okay, I’m not the brightest crayon in the box, so I have a question about the housing app: How do I actually submit it?? I filled out all the portions that I’m able to. I left the part about theme housing and roommates blank because I don’t want to participate in theme housing and don’t have a specific roommate in mind. So how do I tell them that I’m done filling everything out that I need to?

Btw, my first choice was Channing-Bowditch double, then Wada double, then Unit 1 double mini-suite, then Wada triple, and then any room any location because they made me.

Basically I think I’m filling out all my forms wrong. The SLR didn’t ask for ANY additional info, so now I’m pretty sure I accidentally told them I’m not a resident or something.

Also, I JUST rejected UCLA’s offer of admission. I’m not gonna lie . . . it felt pretty good.

you just have to pay the $20 fee and you’re good to go. Even though you’ve paid, you can still make changes to the app. till it’s due.

Thanks kitkat. I can’t remember whether or not I paid the fee . . . pretty sure I did. Basically, if there’s a little green check mark and then “Applied: 05/23/2009,” but with “Not Complete” written underneath, does that mean I’ve completed everything I can up to this point and I’m good to go?

i believe so!

Anyone choose to live off-campus? Many houses or apartments near Cal are bigger and cheaper than dorms. Why didn’t you choose them? I need some advices to make the decision. I didn’t submit my housing app yet.

I just thought living on campus would have more opportunities to meet people. Didn’t want to miss out on the social scene. I think you also get the whole community feel with people on your floor in the dorms.

The Wada and Channing apartments are cheaper than the dorms though.

Did any of you guys get Wada? I got it and I wonder if it’s any bette than regular Unit 2 housing? I’ve heard Wada is cleaner, is that true? Did anyone visit it?

wada is a great option for transfers who want to live in the dorms. it is totally doable, however, to just go out and find your own apartment/house to rent and STILL have the great social life and meet other people. it -can- be a way cheaper alternative to the 850/mo that wada costs.
