I have a 3.69 GPA right now. I have pre-req's all planned for sociology and Legal Studies. I want to eventually go to Law School. Which major is easier to get into Legal Studies or Sociology? Please current UC Berkeley students help me out. I really want to get into UCB!

I will probably have a 3.75 by end of fall. IGETCI will be done! What are my chances? Which major should i pick to apply to? Thanks so Much!

Your username is VERY misleading. Lol but as a Sociology major at Cal, i’ll help you out! First off, apply as whatever major you’re interested in most; officers appreciate the fact that students show interest and are passionate about what they study. During the application process, majors are grouped into major departments (i.e. social sciences, arts & humanities, biological sciences), rather than by individual majors. Admissions to the Social Sciences has a 20% admittance rate; Legal Studies, however, is an Independent major and has about a 40% admittance rate. Hopefully this helped you out!

Note: Legal Studies was not specifically designed to prepare students for law school, nor does it provide paralegal training. Law school doesn’t require any specific major. :)

OMG!!! I’m so sorry!!! hahahaha. I just looked back at that thread we were talking through right now and you helped me tremendously! I have a hard time remembering who I talk to on here! lol. Since I’m already here lemme ask you 1 more question! How are you doing in your classes this semester? :)

Haha Me? Well I’ve come to accept that i’m a student worthy of nothing higher or lower than B’s, as far as my professors are concerned. Every exam i’ve taken, B. Every paper written, B. Blood type, B+. Fortunately, a 3.0 here is COMPLETELY FINE with me!

HALLOWEEN PARTY TONIGHT!..Now to put on my banana suit.

Sociology will be slightly easier to get into. In addition, legal studies is a notoriously bad major if you want to go to law school. They tend to score poorly on the LSAT and get relatively poor GPAs which, together, constitute the two most important factors in law school admission. It’s difficult to say whether this is because the major is more difficult or whether it simply attracts students of a lower caliber. Either way, you might as well just stick with sociology.

Actually I checked and sociology might be slightly harder to get into (average gpa of admits was about .2 higher). But anyway, to back up what I said above:

Legal studies majors do poorly on the LSAT (perhaps too much memorization and not enough critical thinking?)

Berkeley
Fall 2008
Enrollees Cumulative UC GPA (after one year)

Legal Professions And Studies 14 2.98
Social Sciences 235 3.41

I pulled this off of statfinder.ucop.edu

custom tables –> persistence, graduation, and college GPA by entering class –> transfer students from california community colleges –> Fall 2008 (though you can select whichever years you like, the trend persists) –> California residents –> Berkeley –> UC GPA –> simple table –> most recent field of study –> run table

Obviously 14 is an extremely small sample size, but the figures still roughly agree with the past years and with what i’ve heard from friends.

Hey! I’m a current UC Berkeley student. I don’t go on college confidential too much anymore, but if you have any questions join my group on Facebook www.facebook.com/groups/berkeley2016/ for any questions or advice Good luck!

Hi, I wanna know if you’re accepted, cuz I am also majoring in Sociology. I am planning to transfer next fall. My first priority is Sociology at UCLA. I don’t know what the average admitted GPA of Sociology at UCB is. FYI–I am an international student. My gpa is 3.81 now.
