HELP! I need to declare my desired major my first semester at UC Berkley before I exceed 70 units. Unfortunately, one of the prerequisites that I need to be enrolled in my first semester at Berkeley is already full!! If a class that I desperately need is already full, who should I contact? Should I email the professor, the department, the major adviser?? Do they reserve seats for transfer students? Will the advisers at CalSo help me out?

They don’t necessarily reserve seats for counselors but have separate discussions saved for transfers… At least for polisci majors. When’s your calso date? I would seek your adviser first just b/c they might be able to help you… or email the professor if you’re desperate.

Why do you have to declare your major before you exceed 70 units? That seems ridiculous to me. Which major is it?

I doubt highly that they reserve seats for transfer students. And I also doubt that you are in as much trouble as you think you are. But the best person to talk to (or email) would be your major adviser.

Yes, the advisers at calso would be able to help you.

It’s for the Media Studies major. I’m required to declare the major during my first semester. Thanks for the info.

Actually, you should talk to the major advisor at CALso. If the class you full you should waitlist it and often times the waitlist is “manual” which means that the major advisor manually selects who gets in. They usually won’t bump someone who is already enrolled (although there have been occassions) but this is ideal for an upper division transfer.
Hope this helps.

I was worried about this too, but with regards to my major, Econ.

I emailed CalSO and they sent me back a response:

“Something that is good about Cal is that during phase I students can only
sign up for 10.5 units thus the people with the first appointments don’t
take all of the space in classes. Also, if you look in the schedule of
classes something that may be helpful is if you go to “Click here for
current enrollment information and course restrictions” you can see the
limitations of the class, which can include open seating, upper division
students, major students. Thus there is some saved seating. Also, because
this major is capped, CalSO would be helpful because you do meet with your
major advisor who could potentially give you the advisor code to get into
certain classes because they know that you need these classes. I would
advise you to possibly contact the advisor or department and ask for
further information.”

I hope that answers your question.

Thank you for your help, everyone! I have contacted the advisor but I have a feeling that they won’t be able to help since the class I need is a history class, not a media studies class. I’m positive that they will be able to completely answer my question at CalSo on Wednesday because there’s only so much detail and concern that one can include in an email! Thanks again.
