I got into both UC Berkeley and Davis, but I'm not sure which one to go to, and i need to decide soon! I was offered a regent's scholarship at Davis, and a spot in their Honors program. Cal will cost my parents over $20,000 per year, whereas Davis will cost them about $5,500 next year (probably more afterwards, but still less than berkeley). I will probably be in the middle of my class at Berkeley, but in the upper part at Davis. I just want to know what you would do.
Thanks!

I think going to Davis, in your situation, certainly makes sense.

Depends if you can afford the cost of Berkeley.

What do you want to study and what do you want to do after Berkeley? My answer to a prospective I-Banker would differ from my answer to a prospective farmer.

lol^^

to the OP, have you tried visiting both campuses and deciding which holds a better “fit” for you. that can make the decision slightly less agonizing.

Davis is an awesome college town that many Berkeley students really like when they visit. If you think you can be happy at either, then Davis will save your family a lot of money (if that is a consideration). It’s a very cool campus. Since this is the Berkeley forum, I do not need to go on and on about how cool Cal is. Both of my kids got into Berkeley (one attending) and both can see themselves at Davis when they visit friends there. Plus, it is so much cheaper when you move off campus there. It may be unwise to spend to spend an additional $75,000 or $80,000 of your family’s income when you really aren’t absolutely convinced that Berkeley is worth the extra money for you. You can go to Davis and have a great four years for next to nothing and then come to Berkeley for graduate school: the best of both worlds! Good luck with your decision.

premed? go to davis

I was in exactly the same situation last year and chose to come to Cal because of the feel of the school. I love it here and am really happy, but at the same time I find myself occasionally regretting turning down regents at Davis and the chance to get better grades, especially since I’m planning on going to grad school. It really depends on what you want out of your undergrad experience.

I was in a similar situation last year, picking between Regents UCLA and regular Berkeley. I also picked Cal because of the feel of the school, and I don’t regret it.

berkeley is regarded as the best public institution in the world and while davis is good in its own respect, i would choose wisely. think about the long term, etc

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!

I’m currently at ucsd, and got in as a transfer to both Davis and Berkeley (I applied to Davis in the hopes that I would get more financial aid than ucsd gave me - money is an issue for me - and applied to Berkeley just to see if I could get in, not thinking I actually would). Pretty much, I’m not staying at ucsd next year (considering the options are better school/same price and equal school/a LOT cheaper). But Berkeley or Davis? I like both campuses; going to Davis would save me about $10,000 a year (compared to either ucsd or berkeley) because of a scholarship.

I’m a poli sci major, so Sacramento might have some tempting internship opportunities. But Berkeley is Berkeley… How much does it matter where you got your undergraduate degree if you’re planning on going on to grad/law school?

are you kidding me berkeley is such a better college than davis you can’t even compare the two.

a question to consider, how would u feel if u went to berkeley and then had ‘what if’ thoughts of davis, in comparison to, how u would feel if u went to davis and had ‘what if’ thoughts of berkeley?
edit: wait why the heck was this post bumped up?

Speakerb0xxx you should really check the dates next time

I’d go to Davis.

If you can afford it, then by all means go to Berkeley.

Davis is fine, but it’s not even a peer school to Berkeley, to be honest about it.

Don’t listen to people who give you a blanket statement that Cal is better than Davis. It completely depends on what you want to study, and which environment you like better. Cal might have a stronger reputation for some majors with some employers and graduate schools, and Davis with others, but even within those majors, it depends on what you do while you’re there–what opportunities you take advantage of, what professors you get to know, what your grades are. When my daughter was deciding on schools, she had a similar choice between UCLA with no extra money and Davis with the Regents and Honors program. From talking to students and professors at both places, she came to the conclusion that there are more internship opportunities for undergraduate science students and Davis than at UCLA, which was important to her. She also liked the feel of the town of Davis, and all the bikes on campus. She actually didn’t end up at either of those schools (she’s at Rice), but the point I’m trying to make is that Cal and Davis are both great schools and you should weigh all the factors, not just the opinions you’re going to hear here about the “prestige” of Cal.

When I said Berkeley is better, I meant Berkeley is more prestigious and school prestige matters a lot.

Berkeley also provides much better opportunities after graduation. the data will show that Berkeley grads are paid more, get into better law schools, med schools, business schools. for example, Berkeley is a top 8 producer to Harvard med, harvard law, Yale law. Number 1 feeder school to UCSF, to Haas, Boalt. Number 2 to feeder school to UCLA med, UCLA law and UCLA Anderson. Look at the data. Whilst Davis is good, it’s not in the league of Berkeley.

I just love it when someone uses the ‘search’ feature and then proceeds to resurrect a post that’s 8 months old… However, now I WOULD like to know where college23 chose to go so very long ago…
