Hello all. I am currently a HS senior who was accepted to both UC Berkeley and SLC (polar opposites, right?) and I am currently in a really tough debate between the two of them. I really like Sarah Lawrence's education style, but at the same time I feel as if I need to learn how to be competitive, and Berkeley, from what I've read, is the place for stuff like that. On the short term, I plan to either major in economics or some sort of politics/economics hybrid, with a long-term plan for law school.

I also want to try my hand at transferring to other privates later on in order to alleviate costs (right now both schools cost about the same for me, but there are a few other privates out there that I have heard are very generous with financial aid if accepted), although I don't really want to act as if I will only be there for two years. Nonetheless, if one school is better than the other at that, that is a factor I'd like to consider.

Berkeley is much stronger in economics. Classes will be very large, with most interaction happening with TAs, but the range and depth of class offerings there cannot really be compared to the rather modest list of courses at SLC. Not sure about the transfer thing, but your focus on economics or political economy suggests Berkeley…

Sarah Lawrence is primarily focused on arts and some humanities; its social studies offerings other than history are rather limited. Math and statistics, which are important supporting subjects for economics, are limited as well – if you want to go on to a PhD program in economics, you likely want to take some junior/senior level math and statistics courses like real analysis, advanced linear algebra, and advanced-level introduction to probability and statistics.

However, if you are ok being constrained by the limited course catalog (since law school has no specific course or major requirements), then Sarah Lawrence may be acceptable for you.
