UC Berkeley Please?

Hey all, I have a passion for physics and I wanna pursue it as a researcher. I've consistently seen UC Berkeley top the rankings for natural sciences, so I have been wanting to get into UC Berkeley for a long time. Im 18 this year, taking my ' A ' Levels, am a Singaporean.

I'll be taking my SATs in June, what are the scores that would enable me to enter UCBerkeley? I've signed up for SAT reasoning test, MATH II, Physics and MATH I. I intend to major in physics (theoretical).

Here are my stats:
2007: Represented secondary school to participate in SMO Math Project Festival (didnt win anything but a COP)
2008: -SAJC (my high school) Commendation awards for Science Stream (x2)
-Represented school in Singapore Physics Olympiad (didnt win anything but a COP)
-A*star-MOE student attachment programme, Research institute: Institute of Microelectronics
-Took part in Youth Science Fair (Didnt win anything)
-Took part in SSEF (Singapore science and engineering festival) (didnt win anything)
2009: -SAJC (my high school) Commendation awards for science stream
-In Talent Management Program
-Represented school in NTU Mech Challenge (didnt win anything)
-took up 2 H3s in Physics and Mathematics, their university subjects (few in my school have that)

I have participated in many scientific activities, but I didnt win anything yet Is it over for me to enter UC Berkeley? Is there another option for me besides UC berekely i dont mind other colleges, as long as they are good for natural sciences (physics) and well-known.

To be honest, UC Berkeley is hard to get into if you aren’t in California, let alone international. But, if you have a high GPA (~3.8-4.0), high SAT’s (~2200), and a high class ranking (~top 5%), then you should probably get in, as UC Berkeley doesn’t have as much of a holistic view as other top colleges.
Other schools good in physics and well-known: I’d say MIT and Stanford.
Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/683685-chance-me-plz.html</a></p>

MIT Stanford is wayyy out of my league :(

^ thats probably true…
heres a few though  some that are not AS hard ! :

Cornell, Uchicago, Utexas, U michigan, UCSB(santa barbara), UCLA(los angeles), UCSD(san diego), UMD(maryland), Ucolorado - boulder, U washington, U wisconsin, NYU, purdue, Uflorida, U rochester and more… :)

These are some that are hard, but not too hard, like the top ivies, who even though they may not have a superb physics program, still are next to impossible to get into…
They are all part of the US News and World Report list of schools, pretty sure all are top 100, think the lowest is Ucolorado - boulder, but physics wise, they are all spread out and boulder is actually top 20 i think  so yea, check those out, maybe talk to some faculty, look at the campus, costs, fin aid. activities, location etc etc  im sure ull find something you like  and youre bound to get into at least a few of those ! :)

hope that helps! :)

Thank you! But im concerned with the reputation of the universities too, cause I wanna get into a good graduate university after that…probably like MIT, princeton, caltech etc.

yea, all of those have pretty good reputation, id say that top reputed ones from the list i gave you are:

uchicago, cornell, ucla, u mich, NYU, ucsd, urochester, utexas, ucsb, u washington, u wisconsin, umd, uflorida, u colorado, purdue. or something like that…

but its important for you to understand, that though you have great stats, there are A LOT of applicants from asia applying to top schools, and even out of those, some of the ppl who dont get into the top schools are people who have won national awards and done outstanding research and everything… the asia international pool is EXTREMELY highly competitive, probably the most competitive in the world, except for the one that also needs fin.aid…
i think any of these schools will give u a good shot at a top graduate school, but the safest bets would be uchicago and cornell, then ucla, umich, nyu and maybe ucsd!

and btw, do you need financial aid ? because if you do, then im sure most of these school may even be out of reach for you… sorry to say but thatll just be the icing on the nearly impossible cake…
check out the international forum and see some of the int. applicants who are from asia, and then youll have a new perspective… some of them are serious geniuses who have been like the top ranked in their respective countries and been to competitions being on of like the top 10 that represent their country and win outstanding prices…
you still havent won anything so that puts you at a disadvantage…
im not saying you are bad, youre not, you have a great app, just be realistic and do your research and youll see

sigh, i just want to get into a good university OVERSEAS that has a great physics research program, i really cant stand it here in sg

You can get into a good graduate school from any school. I would also recommend University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign, Penn State, and Norte Dame. You should also go here and check out some stats on UC Berkeley: [■■■■■■■■■■■■■ - University of California: Berkeley](http://■■■■■■■■■■■■■.com/college.php?college=25#cstats)

I heard UIUC’s pretty good for electrical engineering, but my passion is in physics.

yea well all those schools i listed are in like the top 50 physics programs in the country, most of them top 30, and they are great schools :)

check them out. with good grades youd be set for mostly anywhere :)
