UC Berkeley - Political Economy

Hi

D22 got into UC Berkeley ( Political Economy). Couple of questions -

  1. What are the best ways/ resources for her to learn more about UCB , Political Economy major, and any other majors/ minors she can explore?
  2. In one of the threads on cc , political economy was part of the selective/impacted majors. What does that mean?
  3. In this major, is it difficult or easy to enroll into classes one wants to join ( just hearing many stories about extremely large classes ( trying to understand if that is limited to Engineering, STEM or if political economy has smaller or larger classes in general)

Thanks

It means that the minimum grade and GPA requirements are higher than C or 2.0 for at least some prerequisite courses. See Political Economy < University of California, Berkeley and How to Declare a Major - Political Economy .

For class sizes, you can take a look at which courses are required or optional for the major at https://politicaleconomy.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/PE-REQUIREMENTS-POLICIES-1_26_22_NR.pdf and look up class sizes at https://classes.berkeley.edu/ .

Does everyone get into college of letters and science undeclared? In the UC application , my D22 selected political economy . However the letter does not say anything about that major. So when the freshmen join, can they take up classes in year 1 and 2 and opt for a different major than the one they put on the UC application form?

Yes, students entering in L&S enter as undeclared. Frosh entering as L&S undeclared are not bound to what they said their intended major is, nor do they get special consideration for that major (there was a proposal to treat L&S CS specially in this respect, but I don’t know what became of it).

L&S has “advising neighborhoods”, meaning groups of L&S advisers for undeclared students who are interested in some general type of major: Appointments & Advice | L&S Advising
