So, I was just looking through assist.org more on looking for
UCB's "Mass Communication B.A"
First off, the major "Mass Communication" was off the list.
Couldn't find it at first.
So, I thought to myself what the fck just happened.
Then I saw this particular major called "Media Studies A.B"
Looking through the pre-req requirement of Media Studies
it was the same as Mass Comm.
So why would Berkeley change the major's title
and what's the difference between a B.A and A.B?
Thanks.

yeah, they changed the title. I have the same question.

Mass Communications is a misleading title. Hence, they changed the major's title to 'Media Studies'- a much more appropriate name for what Cal's communication major focuses on.
Upon finding out about this name change, it's bad reputation here at Cal, and it's mediocre professors, I changed my major.

As for the A.B. thing- no clue.

hey fashionaddikt, thanks for the info.
i was just wondering if you're a comm major too?
if so, did you apply for ucla's comm program as well?
cause i wanna know all the details to be competitive.

Sure did. I had my heart set on UCLA's comm studies program. They emphasize more of what I'm interested in.

I was rejected. I was bitter at first but now I'm so much happier I'm here in Berkeley as opposed to UCLA.

Aim for as close to a 4.0 as possible, ECs that show your interest in the field, and a damn good personal statement.

But even with a 4.0, you're not guarenteed in.
comm studies is the most impacted major at UCLA. More so than business econ. Don't depend on admission into UCLA's comm studies major as it is EXTREMELY competitive with a meager ~13% acceptance rate.

In other words (& forgive me for sounding discouraging- by all means, give it a shot), have a good back up.

hey fashionaddikt. i am also interested in this major. i just want to know, is that easy to change your major in berkeley??

Very easy. For the most part, that is.
You're not admitted by major. You're admitted by department.
For example, if you listed your intended major as Mass Comm, you'll be admitted into the College of Letters and Science. So within that college (which happens to be the biggest of all colleges), you can pursue any major. It might be difficult if you want to get into Econ or Social Welfare or even Mass Comm if you didn't intend to major in it when you applied since they are impacted or "capped" majors- meaning that there is more demand than space available.

At UCLA it is close to impossible to change your intended major. Unlike Berkeley, you go in declared.
