So far I've gotten Berkeley. Applied to Berkeley, UCLA, San Diego, and Davis.

ditto here... so I guess I'm not alone...

UCLA has more applicants than Berkeley.

Hmm...so if I have gotten both the UCLA and the Berkeley Regents letters, can I assume that I've been accepted to both? What a pleasant surprise! (...if that were true ;) )

is it easier to get the RC scholarship for Berkeley than LA?

how much money do u get if u get accepted after the interview for regents at berkely?

Berkeley: 1000$ if you have no need. Up to all of it if you have need.

I just got my Berkeley Regents E-mail Notification.
Sweet. Berkeley was never one of my top 3, but this definitely makes it shine a bit more in my mind (I have LARGE financial need).

Anyone have any dirt on the interview?
I think mine will be March 8th. I'm super excited!

I also applied to LA, Davis, and SD, but nothing from them.

Can anyone confirm the 600 number...that 600 out of the 1000 are offered a Regents?

Thanks.

The number of awards offered varries each year depending on yeild estimates. What matters is that 200 of the ~1000 students invited to an interview accept the Regents award and matriculate at Cal. If I had to guess at how many students are actually offered the Regents award, I'd put the figure at more like 500.

Some out-of-staters do get the RC scholarship, but I believe they are only eligible to get about $20,000 of aid compared to the ~$35,000-40,000 it costs to attend from out-of-state. I don't know if it's harder for them to be awarded the scholarship.

The number 600 comes from an offhand mention by RCSA last year in April. RCSA asked Scholars to help call invited new scholars to get them to come to Cal, mentioning that about 600 phone calls needed to be made. The number may vary from year to year so this is consistent with what Jason said.

my interview's on the 7th. What sucks is that it coincides with the same date as the AIME. Oh well, I'm excited anyway. Are Regents interviews like regular college interviews?

The "interview" is just a casual talk. The professor who's gonna interview you is just gonna introduce you to Berkeley and blahblahblah.....nothing special. Last year, my interviewer was, if you can imagine, the type of professor who closes off himself with his research and never talks. So, since he was weird, and I didn't really know what to expect, my interview was 70% dead-air; it was awkward, and only last for like 5 minutes.
So even if you think you "bomb" the interview, you can still get the scholarship, just like me haha :~).

Any other personal experiences from the interview?

How are we supposed to dress?

last year most people tended to dress business casual. just look nice and you should be fine

Wait. is the Regents the same thing as the Regents and Chancellors Scholarship? Because I got a letter from Berkeley about it and I'm not sure what that means...

for all the people who got nominated for regents and chancel. for fall 2005 were you all told at the interview that you have been admitted to the school

Please rest assured that all of you who got invitation are accepted. I Guarantee. Well, unless you said F-you to the interviewer......

byebluemonday: Yes, and sort of. The Berkeley RC scholarship is a Regents' scholarship, but it's a little different than the ones at other campuses.

Other UC campuses have two different awards called Regents' scholarships and Chancellor's scholarships. The difference is that the Regents' scholarship is paid for from UC funds, amounting to about $1.2m per campus, plus some private/donation/endowment money on the campus level, while Chancellor's scholarships are paid for from the individual campuses' funds. The name of the scholarship reflects the source of the money. Officially, Regents' scholarships are better than Chancellor's scholarships, but in practice they confer the same benefits, same amount of money, etc. UC-wide, I think many more students are awarded Regents' scholarships than Chancellor's scholarships.

At Berkeley, these two scholarships are combined into the Regents' and Chancellor's scholarship, my guess is for historical-political reasons.

At my interview, we talked about politics and the social implications of technology for 30-40 minutes. It was a very friendly conversation. I dressed a bit more casually than standard business casual.

Was there a reason for them to ask you about technology and politics? Your essay/extra curriculars or was it totally random?
