UC Berkeley Regents Scholarship?

A lot of the dynamics behind the interview depend on who your interviewer is. My interviewer was a Professor in the French Department, even though I had applied as an EECS major to the College of Engineering. Needless to say, the first minute or two was a bit akward, as I don't know more than ~10 words in French.

If allthosedays' interviewer was a Professor of Theology, it doesn't surprise me at all that that's where that interview went.

BTW Just to clarify...

Do you need to do anything else to apply for the scholarship other than show up at the interview? Do you need to submit an extra essay or letters of recommendations or anything? Because I know applying for the UCLA Regents scholarship required those.

Also, is there any way to find out which professor is going to interview you ahead of time?

Thanks!

Um guys i have a problem, I got selected for the Berkley Regents Scholarship.. (I know a little late) but now when I got to RSVP, it shows no times... meaning all are taking up. What do i do?!

call them. No worries- you got the invite which means they actually WANT you to come visit them!

You can bring a letter of recommendation with you if you want, but you don't have to. I didn't know to bring one and I still got the scholarship. There are no supplemental essays.

I don't remember how we got to talking about politics and technology; the conversation just sort of naturally went that direction. My interviewer was a statistician.

just for clarification...what is business casual?? a suit?

Business Casual - 'usually' means nice dockers (type) pants, and a long sleeve shirt. Tie is optional. Many business have 'casual Fridays', and this is what we have been told by senior management, as to what is acceptable. Depending upon the business, or occasion, a nice short sleeve shirt can be acceptable. There is no strict nationwide standard for businss casual, but always better to overdress (a Little) then to underdress.

Business Attire (as contrasted with Business Casual) - means suit or nice sport coat with dress pants. dress shoes.

^ p.s. to my note above. In case you didn't see it written explicitely, Business Casual does not include blue jeans (no matter how nice they may be). Unless your company directly states "blue jeans are included" then you can assume that they are not.

Anyone doing OHP the same night or the night before their Regents interview?

Hey guys, right now I'm a second year EECS student at Berkeley. I am public coordinator of Regents Chancellor's Assocation, the club that provides social, academic, and professional events for Regents Scholars. We are responsible for OHP. In addition, I am on the Academic Senate for Regents Scholarship. I was reading this thread, and wanted to answer a few questions.

First and foremost, if you got the scholaship you did get in. I initially was doubtful, beacuse I applied under college of engineering. But an offer to interview means you are in. In actuality, people who get regents interviews are determined by the admissions officers. Each candidate is graded from 1-5 with 1 being the highest. If you receive a 1, that means your application was rated the highest. Currently, approx 1200 have been offered the scholarship.

Regarding OHP, OHP for me was one of the best nights before going to Berkeley. You get fed the best pizza Berkeley has to offer (Zachary's) and ice cream. You will receive a host who is most likely a freshman becuase they are the ones living in dorms. There will be social events and a evening tour of the campus.

Regarding the interview, yes I know that many times you get paired with the wrong interviewer. Mine was in the college of chemistry, so it wasn't that bad. But we are working on making sure that interviewer is compatible with you. You are not required (and probably should not, I dont' know about anyone that did) bring anything extra such as letters of rec.

Regarding who gets the offer, like I said before, it is made by admissions. I have seen some really smart (and not the best all around people) get Regents, so I am assuming academics does play a lot into it. But I have also seen some that are not the brightest, so yes, you can exceed in academics and get it, but you can also succeed in something else such as extra ciriculars and obtain it also.

Regarding priority registration, my committee in the Academic Senate is working on it. Please know that it is extremely hard to get a group priority registration, beacuse other groups will demand the same. But on a side note, about 70% of second year Regents have advanced standing (I have senior standing right now). So registration is based on your standing, so in theory, you are getting advanced registration anyways. Also, I think we are getting more funds and will get an increased honorary award, but I am unsure about that.

If you have any other questions please post them. I have try to answer them, but I am extremely busy.

By the way, my name is Kai Xia. I'll be at most of the OHP's, so if you come, try to say hi. I will be going around talking to you guys, and it would be interesting to meet CC members.

What kind of social events go on at OHP?

Wow--
Kai Xia, thank you for answering our questions!

More questions--
how are the interviews conducted?
how important are they?
do the interviewers rate the students also?

By the way,
who is doing an interview in LA?

dinosaurrawr

Lord Asquith

I just read in the Regent's/Chancellor's email that recommendations are optional.

So....to bring or not to bring...that is the question....

Any insight on the subject?

I do believe I read in someone's post that most people do not bring letters of rec.

Oh btw.

I am going to the interview on March 5th.

Mine is this sunday the 5th in LA

mine is on saaaaaaturday, march 12 in LA : )
anyone on march 12?

does attending the OHP have any bearing on your chances to get the RC scholarship? I would like to go but i'm sorta busy and i've already been to berkeley for summer school so i have a pretty nice feel of what the college is like.

Is anyone in here a transfer student? When are transfer students notified?
