UC Berkeley Supplemental Freshman Questionnaire

I got the talent supplement and was admitted! This is truly the biggest gift a university can give its applicants, and if it was up to me the supplement would be part of the basic application. IF YOU GET ONE DO NOT BLOW IT OFF. Especially the talent supplement they saw something in you worth admitting beyond your grades and test scores. AND YOU GET TO SEND A LETTER OF REC FOR GODS SAKE. 'Nuff said.

I got the supplement and got accepted! But I was still surprised and in shock mode. Everything happens for a reason.

both my friend and I received the borderline supplement and both accepted! :)

I was accepted!

hey guys, i was wondering if there was anyone else who received the talent supplement and got rejected. I received one for chess. I have been ranked in the top 150 in the nation for my age group from 9th-12th grade. i have also been ranked in the top 15-20 in the state. In addition, i am the president of my school’s chess club (5th place in the state my freshman year), 3 league championships.

Stats: UC GPA-3.87
SAT I-2200

senior year first sem grades: A in Contemp Lit, physics (taken at de anza), and lab assistant. B’s in AP Econ, AP Stats, and Java.

major: undeclared, pre-business

does anyone know if I can contact Berkeley/appeal my decision? I really want to know why i was rejected…i thought my stats were fine, i even asked people last year about the supplement, and they said my stats were fine. i don’t know of anyone else who got rejected that received the talent supplement…

if anyone can help, please respond!

thanks

It asked about whether my high school provides adequate resources, if I had any challenges, if my friends influenced my desire to go to university - things like that. The interesting thing is I didn’t even submit all the answers to the 14 questions by their 10-day deadline time window. I only answered about 2 questions…in the rest of the boxes I put something like “Dear Berkeley Admissions, I am still in the process of answering the rest of these questions. I assure you I still have a lot to write and I will have it done by February 5th.” I actually didn’t have them done by then, so it was a few days after the deadline before I actually completed all the questions thoroughly… I thought for sure I ruined my chances of getting into Berkeley because I didn’t meet the deadline for the questionnaire, and although they say the questionnaire only helps you not hurt you, I still thought it would look bad that it seemed like I didn’t take this offer seriously. But miraculously, today, I found out I got accepted to UC Berkeley. I don’t know if my little “Dear Berkeley Admissions” note made a difference or they just happened to review my questionnaire DAYS AFTER the deadline, but I shared this anecdote to tell future recipients of these supplemental questionnaires not to stress and worry too much about how the questionnaire might get you rejected. Sure, none of you should follow my example and turn it in AFTER the deadline (I have a bad habit of doing that) but my case showed that it won’t be the end of the world if you do somehow end up completing it late.

I was accepted!

My friend and I both received the supplement and got rejected.

D got the talent supplemental for her sport and was accepted.
SAT 2070
UW GPA: 4.0 W:4.4 UC:?

This year seems to be in line with prior years, in that the talent supplement recipients seem to have a preponderance of acceptances (but certainly not all unfortunately), while the borderline supplement recipients have a more mixed set of results. Informally it looks like about 40-50% or so get a yes, which is better than the overall acceptance rate but not dramatically so.

My friend and I received the borderline and got rejected.

I applied to UCB for fall 2013 and I just received the supplemental questionnaire for talent! i was hoping I could possibly get my tips? UCB is my number one choice!

@Dancer

Hi! I PM’ed you with some tips, check your inbox. :)

Hey! Could you post some of the questions here?

If you received a questionnaire, you can forward the questions to me at freehelp (at) askmssun . com and I will send you my interpretation of what the campus is looking for in your response. I also offer step-by-step guidance (fee-based service) in filling out the supplemental questionnaire; just ask me if you are interested.

I have a 1640 on my SAT and a 25 on my ACT. But my UC GPA is a 4.23. I am currently my school’s ASB President and involved in other ECs. My personal statements were probably a huge factor in getting the supplement because I talked about cultural restrictions on my education/parents divorce/working two jobs in the summer while fasting. I have been working on my supplement but just wanted a clarification on guidelines or any of that. THIS IS SO SCARY lol. I feel relieved that I’m being considered because UC Berkeley has been my number 1 choice all of high school but I’m obviously scared as well.

Yessss!! Happiest I’ve ever been to check my email!! I got the supplement, I did not look to check which one, but I am pretty sure it is the disadvantaged one. 3.95 UC GPA, 2110 SAT, ELC

Wait is it a good or a bad thing if you get it?

Buttafly are you an in state student?

Receiving the supplement could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending upon how strong of a candidate you thought you were. If you thought you were really strong, then it would be a bad thing (as it would mean that the adcom thinks that you are not as strong as you thought). If you thought you were a weak candidate, then it would be a good thing (as the supp request means that you are at least in the running).

Here’s an interesting question: Did anyone last year with high stats (say, 4.2+ UCGPA and 2100+ SAT or 31+ ACT) not get the supplement and then get rejected?
