UC Berkeley TAP (Transfer Alliance Program)

Hey CC community, I made this thread to find out if there are any others who have joined UCB TAP or are in the process of joining in 2012. Previous TAP students are welcomed to join in on the discussion. If you want list your info such as prospective community college, planned major, colleges previously applied to and other information that would be great to know as background info.

Hey! I met with a UCB rep about a week ago and filled out the paperwork, so I guess I’m in TAP too. I’m currently attending El Camino College and plan on majoring in Sociology. However, the rep said I should also consider double majoring in both Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies and make my own major up. First Generation college student!

El Camino here too, but I’m a “previous TAP student.” Accepted to Berkeley(Haas) for the fall. If you have any questions hopefully I can help. @oli Looks like you’re joining TAP right as you’re getting into CC? That’s great. I didn’t find out about UCB TAP till a year in.

Hey guys I’m part of the Berkeley tap too! I will be going to the so cal meeting in June.

I know that Berkeley tap helps significantly, but does it also help you when applying to other uc schools like ucla? :)

Hey guys, another ECC student here, GO ELCO! lol
@Discosteve
I think you’ll be seeing Aileen, she’s wonderful and super helpful and if statistic is any indicator you’ll be fine (80%+ Admission rate!)
@Mestudystuff
Congratulations on your admission to HAAS! were u @ the arcadia reception last night?!
@Yomaxe
Absolutely! if your application is strong enough to pass the Cal’s admissions, you should be good for the rest…
Edit:there are always exceptions to this of course!

Whoa, I didn’t realize so many ECC students use this site! If only I met you guys/gals! Everyone I’ve encountered at ECC has been…well…not driven haha.
@MeStudyStuff
I’ll be sure to hit you up with questions! That’s if you don’t mind answering them :).
@SH2mathecon
Yeah I met with her, she’s awesome! Extremely helpful and really kind! Yeah she said 80% of the students got in…hopefully I’m one of them next year! So excited…can’t wait!

Can those who had TAP and got admitted post what major they were going for and their overall stats? Hopefully it’ll help me gauge where abouts I need to be

How do you qualify for UCB’s TAP?

@HockeyGiant
You meet with a UCB representative who asks you a series of questions.
If you are a racial minority (hispanic,latino,black), qualify for financial aid (requires a certain income bracket), or you’re a first generation student then you qualify!

So it’s not really like UCLA’s TAP where you qualify from an honors program?

@HockeyGiant
No, the two programs are completely separate. You can be in both but they’re not co-dependent. What school do you go to?

I’m at SJSU right now, but I plan on attending West Valley College next year, and then applying to the UCs.

@yomaxe For sure it will look good even to UCLA. Something you should know, there is a section called “Education Predatory Program”(IIRC), in the UC application. There is 4 empty slots. Filling in UCB TAP and UCLA TAP would definitely look better than some program that isn’t provided through a university. And besides, even if it didn’t look good on app, the program itself helps you so much during the transfer process, there really shouldn’t be a reason not to join assuming you qualify.

@S2Hmathecon arcadia reception? Was that for incoming transfers? Naw didn’t go. What did they go over? How was it? PM if its too long to write it out in a post(If you don’t mind obviously! :] )

@Disco I agree it is very hard to find others at ecc striving to get to UCLA let alone Cal. But yeah man, if you have any questions I’ll be glad to help. And my general info is bus admin, completed HTP, UCB TAP, UCLA TAP, 3.9gpa, completed all breadth requirement(Haas didn’t want IGETC), last prereq at end of this semester, e.c., w.e., scholarships, etc.

@hockey disco is right. UCB TAP and UCLA TAP are completely different. They provide different things, and the requirements to get in are different. For instance, you are not a UCLA TAP member, you just become TAP certified after you finish your college’s honors program. UCB TAP is a program that helps students through workshops and counseling. You never really get certified in it and they boast that your chances increase but there is no “priority admission” which is what UCLA TAP provides. Also UCB TAP members do not get to apply to UCB with an alternate major, unlike UCLA TAP which does provide that for TAP certified students.

Wow a lot of you are attending the same community
college! I’m goin to city college of SF. Hopefully I’ll meet someone from tap there besides my twin brother -_-.
Im also officially in and I talked to the director Keith Schoon about my education plans.
@ mestudystuff can you give me any tips for Haas or Ucla tap because I’ve been looking into that alot but I’m still confused.

Ok thanks mestudystuff.

I was emailed by berkeley Tap to invite me to join tap. Isn’t in all the paperwork and stuff. Does this mean I’m in the program or not yet?

are there any high shool students who applied to UCB TAP because you weren’t offered admission fall 2012/spring 2013?

@oli Yeah I’d be happy to give you some tips. Can you specify what is it that you wanted to know? You mentioned Haas and UCLA TAP. Anything specific?

@yomaxe If you got the invite, I’m assuming you filled out the application and turned it in? Once you do that, you’re basically ready to go. Nothing too elaborate. Start getting the schedules down for when the rep will visit your school. Or if you have questions you can email/call your rep directly. If you’re in, then you’ll be on their mailing list and you’ll get info on workshops and the like through email. But visits, vary from school to school. I usually got my visit info from the transfer center at my school.

@ mestudystuff yeah I filled out the app and the first meeting for me in so Cali’s in June so they’ll probably tell me more info on the workshops :)

Does Mt sac have a Ucb tap program?

@Cyse00 yes!

Hey everyone, I’m Olivizzle23 twin brother^^. Heres some basic info about myself, and I too am in Berkeley TAP. I can’t wait to start CC , its time to mend my mediocre academic standing and work hard to get in to CAL!I hope to see those admitted into UCB TAP at the June orientation!

Attending : City College of S.F - I’m a commuter from the East Bay area.
Intended Major: Double major- For sure Political science and Ethnic studies or Linguistics.
I graduate high school in 2 weeks.

Even though Im still in high school as we’re speaking I already enrolled at my cc and getting ready to take summer classes in July. Only a few weeks ago I joined the Puente program at my cc, which is a UC sponsored program which is similiar to UCB Tap in that it you get a lot of help, your own counselor etc… Both UCB TAP and Puente are in the check off boxes in the UC application so thats good. Check Puente out at your cc if it is offered and eligible , like TAP you have to meet requirements like 1st gen,low income, disadvantaged etc.
